‘Firing on all cylinders’

Tigers tennis earns third straight win in road sweep

WORTHINGTON — The Marshall tennis team picked up its third consecutive win on Tuesday afternoon, going on the road to Worthington and sweeping the Trojans for a 7-0 victory.

“I think the girls had a good focus knowing that this was a conference and a section match for us, so it was a pretty big match,” Marshall head coach Alex Cleppe said. “They came in with a good focus and just kind of struck the ball very clean today… We had a good talk before the match about the rest of the regular season and how important it is to finish the regular season strong, so they came up really ready to fire on all cylinders.”

Among those riding hot streaks into the match were Taylor DePover and Siri Christensen, who each picked up their fourth singles win in a row. DePover defeated Hannah McNab 6-4, 6-3 in singles No. 1 while Christensen picked up a 6-1, 6-1 win in singles No. 4 against Eleanor Teerink.

Naomi Schroeder and Justine Kirst complete Marshall’s perfect singles run. Schroeder won over Sadie Nickel 6-1, 6-1 in singles No. 2 while Kirst defeated Taylor Mickelson 6-0, 6-0 in singles No. 3.

“I’m feeling pretty good about where our roster is. Obviously, I think there are things we still need to improve on as we head toward the postseason, but I think if we’re playing our best tennis in those matches, I think we’ll have a competitive chance against some of those really tough teams,” Cleppe said. He added that the section has plenty of talent depth with Prior Lake, St. Peter, Jordan, New Prague and the Mankato schools, but he believes the team is putting itself in a position to succeed.

Also perfect for the Tigers on the day was the duo of Lily Verkinderen and Reese Graven.

Marshall’s doubles No. 2 pairing coasted to a 6-0, 6-0 win over Tiana Garcia and Angie Dailiey to set the tone for Marshall’s doubles matchups.

Eliza Holmgren and Olivia Penske defeated Alli Fellows and Mykayla Phoungphet in doubles No. 1 6-0, 6-1 while Reagan Boerboom and Aubrey Schaefer won their match against Cassie Schulz and Emma Hietbrink 6-1, 6-1.

The Tigers (12-6) will wrap up their regular season home schedule with a Friday match at Montevideo and a Monday match against Redwood Valley before the Big South Conference Crossover on Sept. 28.

“I think it’s always a big deal for the players to try to have a good, lasting impression on their home court,” Cleppe said. “It can be an emotional time, but hopefully they can channel their emotions and play some really good tennis.”

Cleppe added that St. James is going to present a strong challenge but that he hopes his team can put their best foot forward and earn another home match in the postseason.

“[St. James] is always a very tough team and I know this year is no different. They’re pretty loaded with their roster, so it’s going to be a challenge come Thursday for us to compete,” Cleppe said. “I look forward to it and I know our girls look forward to it as well.”
