GLENCOE -- The Marshall tennis team opened its season with a quadrangular meet at Glencoe, facing off against Glencoe-Silver Lake, Jordan and Washburn. The Tigers were swept by the latter two opponents but pulled out a 4-3 victory over GSL.
Marshall's win over GSL started with its dominance in the singles matchups. They took three of the four matchups, with Naomi Schroeder and Siri Christensen each winning their matchup in straight sets. Marshall freshman Kathryn Coudron dropped her first set against Aby Smith, 6-7 (4), before pulling out a 6-0 win to force a tiebreaker, which she won 11-9.
Taylor DePover narrowly dropped the first set in her No. 1 singles matchup against Anna Sievert, 7-5, before falling 6-2 in set two.
Lily Verkinderen and Bailyn Parsons took a straight-sets doubles win over Audley Howell and Gabby Hudson to clinch the match for Marshall. The duo won set one 6-1 before taking a dominant 6-0 win in set two to clinch a 4-3 Marshall win.
In the other doubles matches, Eliza Holmgren and Olivia Penske dropped in straight sets to Lydia Simons and Mariah Gutknecht; Aubrey Schaefer and Justine Kirst dropped in straight sets to Eva Stuewe and Sophie Groe.
Washburn took down Marshall 7-0, winning six of the seven matches in straight sets. In those six matches, Marshall never won more than two games in a set.
Naomi Schroeder was the only Tiger to force a third set. She took a 6-2 victory in her first set against Maddie Graff before dropping 6-1 in set two and 10-4 in the tiebreaker.
Marshall's 7-0 loss to Jordan was much of the same, with Marshall losing six of the seven matches in straight sets. Justine Kirst was the exception, taking a 6-4 set victory over Izzy Haugen sandwiched between a 6-0 defeat and a 10-6 tiebreaker loss.
Marshall (1-2) will go on the road to match up against St. Peter today at 4 p.m.
