Marshall Orange get back-to-back wins over AA and Lakeville South

MILROY– The VFW Marshall Tigers concluded the Junior Legion tournament on Saturday with a pair of victories over Lakeville South and Alexandria Area on Saturday afternoon.

In game one, Lakeville jumped out to an early two run lead but Marshall came back to score six runs in the first inning including back to back RBI singles from Levi Maeyaert and Chase Alcorn. Lakeville South scored in the ensuing inning but the Tigers equalized that with a run of there own to keep the lead at four 7-3.

Then Marshall broke the game wide open.

In the bottom of the third, the Tigers scored five runs including a three run double ripped into left field by Logan Philippe, giving the Tigers 12 runs score in the first three innings of play. The pitching of Maeyaert shut down Lakeville South and Marshall was able to secure the win in five innings, 12-3.

Philippe les the team in RBIs with three and was one of three Tigers with two hits in the victory. The other two were Andrew Stelter and Eli Weedman. Weedman and Stelter each drove in a run and both scored two runs in the ballgame. Maeyaert pitched 4 2/3 innings and gave up three hits, three walks, three runs and had three strikeouts. Maeyaert also had two RBIs with a hit.

Head coach Paul Blanchard spoke on the team’s win and learning the little things in the game of baseball.

“They had a number of walks that they gave us, we got some timely hits and scored some guys,”. Blanchard said. “We limited how many walks we had. We made some plays defensively, had a nice double play there to keep things in check. It is one thing with this age group is that you try to make the routine plays routine. We haven’t had a lot of times with these kids but what we have worked on has shown up in the game and it is nice to see. We still have a lot to work on but defensively they have an idea of where to go. If we can make little gains everyday, that’s going to help. If you add up enough small stuff then it becomes a big deal. By the end of the season, we should be a way different team than we are now. That is our goal. So when they get ready for the varsity stuff, none of this will be new to them.”

In game two, The Tigers jumped out to an early lead of 4-0 only to see it erased by six runs scored by Alexandria Area by the third inning. It would be the last run scored by them as the Tigers scored none runs in a row to give them their second consecutive victory 13-6 on Saturday.

Marshall used three pitchers in this game to complete the comeback win in Weedman, who pitched four solid innings allowing no runs and struck out five. JR Vierstraete pitched one inning and Rhees Grosklags pitched two.

Chase Alcorn had a hit with three RBIs giving him five total over the two contests. Leyton Wherry had a three RBI triple in the ball game. Marshall scored 25 runs in the two games on 19 hits. Leyton Wherry had a three RBI triple in the ball game. Marshall scored 25 runs in the two games on 19 hits. Assistant coach Dillon Loft spoke on the team’s victory and how proud he is.

Yes, was really proud of the teams ability to get hits up and down the lineup,” Loft said. “Also in key moments too. Our offense has been on fire these last two games and I think that’s due to everyone finding ways to get on base and not just relying on a couple guys. We have been sound on defense and have had quality pitching play a big factor in our success.”

The Marshall Orange will continue its legion ball season throughout the summer and the next game is June 22nd against Slayton at Yankee Field.

First pitch is at 5:30 p.m.
