Marshall junior legion Black sweeps Harrisburg

The Marshall 17U Junior Legion Black team swept Harrisburg Gold in the teams’ doubleheader at Legion Field Thursday night. Marshall won the first game 12-2 in six innings before eking out a 6-3 win in game two.

Liam Kruse pitched the full six innings in game one, holding Harrisburg to two earned runs on three hits with 11 strikeouts. Kruse also singled and drew three walks at the plate.

Josh Kraft was at the core of Marshall’s offense, driving in three runs on three hits. Two of those three hits were extra-base hits, with Kraft reaching on a double in the first inning and a two-run triple to trigger the run rule in the sixth inning.

Deagan Maurice also tripled in the first inning to score two runs while Sam Thor doubled and drove in one run for Marshall.

In the second game, Kraft started on the mound, pitching six innings and walking away with the win.

Kraft struck out 10 batters while allowing two runs on a pair of hits and six walks.

Logan Miller came on in relief for the seventh inning, allowing an unearned run after Harrisburg reached on an error. He did not allow any hits or walks and struck out a batter.

Marshall never trailed, but it was the fifth inning where it really pulled away. Cooper Mensink singled and Kraft walked to set up Kruse’s RBI single to increase Marshall’s lead to 4-2. Owen Kesteloot drove in Kraft with a double and and advance Kruse to scored, where he scored on a wild pitch to put Marshall up 6-3.

Marshall will next play on Monday at Russell-Tyler-Ruthton at 7:30 p.m.
