Tigers swept by Cardinals in Fairmont

FAIRMONT — The Marshall girls softball team couldn’t get its bats going in Fairmont Thursday afternoon, combining for one run over two games in the doubleheader. The Tigers lost game one 5-1 before dropping the second 6-0.

Marshall scored its lone run of the day in the top of the seventh inning in game one. Morgan Bjella hit a double to start the inning and, after a pair of strikeouts, Regan Loft hit a single to center field to score Bjella.

Bjella and Loft’s seventh-inning hits were the Tigers’ only hits of the game. Lauren Wherry also walked in the fourth inning.

Fairmont pitcher Tegan Livesay struck out 21 batters on the day. She has pitched two perfect games so far this season.

Olivia Houseman was the starting pitcher for Marshall, throwing 4 1/3 innings while allowing four hits, two walks and four runs. She also struck out a pair of batters.

Bjella came on in the fifth with a runner on third and pitched the final 1 2/3 innings while allowing three hits and a run.

Fairmont scored a pair of first-inning runs to start off game two and never looked back. After leading 3-0 through four, a three-run fifth inning sealed the deal for the Cardinals in the late game.

Mackenzie Olson hit a triple with one out in the fifth inning but consecutive strikeouts eliminated the Marshall scoring chance.

Harley Beek pitched all seven innings. She allowed eight hits and one walk while striking out five. Two of the four runs she allowed were unearned, though one came off an error she made.

Bjella also singled twice in game two.

The Marshall Tigers (6-6) will try to rebound and avoid its fourth consecutive loss when it hosts Waseca for a doubleheader on Saturday with the first game slated for 11 a.m.

Starting at $3.95/week.
