Rebels start hot in 10-5 win over Lakers

MCC led by as many as 7 runs in road win

Murray County Central third baseman Taylor Larson hits a pitch deep into center field for a double in the sixth inning of the Rebels' 10-5 win over Lakeview in Cottonwood Friday afternoon.

COTTONWOOD — Nobody could seem to hit Thea Schneider on Friday afternoon as the Murray County Central starting pitcher threw 13 strikeouts to lead the Murray County Central softball team to a 10-5 win over Lakeview.

Schneider didn’t allow a hit through the first five innings, though Lakeview scored twice in the third after Emma Brusren walked, Kiara Hinz reached on a dropped third strike and Olivia Hinz reached on an error.

“She was in the zone today,” MCC head coach Elissa Weineke said. ‘She’s ready to play. It’s finally nice to have some good weather out here, so it was just fun to be out here, I’m sure she was loving it.”

Schneider also hit a first-inning RBI triple and a single on the offensive end.

The Rebels scored two runs in the first inning, three in the second and another pair in the third to take a quick 7-0 lead. They never looked back.

Eight of MCC’s nine starters reached base on the day. Abby Loosbrock scored three times and hit a first-inning triple and Taylor Larson hit a pair of doubles after subbing into the game in the fourth inning.

“We actually had a couple of our starters gone today, took some starters out just to get some other girls in, which was really good, and the other ones stepped up,” Weineke said. “They practice just as hard as the starters too so they’re ready for any situation.”

Lakeview did most of its damage in the bottom of the seventh inning. With only one hit going into the frame, the Lakers got four in the inning to score three runs. After a leadoff groundout, Paige Walker and Brusren singled consecutively and Kiara and Olivia Hinz singled back-to-back following another groundout. Still, Schneider got a strikeout to end the game and allow the Rebels to leave with the win.

“I’ve said this before, but hits are contagious,” Lakeview head coach Chelsey Evans said. “I keep telling them that and once one person does, everybody does. They just came out in that last inning and they didn’t die, so that was great. It was great to see that they just didn’t roll over.”

MCC was consistently able to capitalize on Laker errors. Atalie Rosenbrook, Karissa Hurd and Loosbrock each reached on errors in the second inning and went on to score. Mary Lou McNab had the only hit of the three-run inning, an RBI single.

“Just got to keep practicing and watching all the live softball they can,” Evans said on the miscues. “Making sure that they come to the game punched in and ready for anything.”

Emma Brusren started in the circle for Lakeview for the second day in a row. She struck out five batters while allowing six hits and three walks.

The Murray County Central Rebels (6-3) have now won three straight games as they head into a two-game homestand next week, hosting Mountain Lake Area-Comfrey on Tuesday at 4 p.m. and Adrian/Ellsworth Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

“We just talked about our momentum going into next week,” Weineke said. “We have two big games and this win just going off into the weekend, it’s good for us. We’ll have a good practice on Monday and get ready for those two games.”

Lakeview (4-8) will host Renville County West/B.O.L.D. on Monday at 4:30 p.m.

Starting at $3.95/week.
