COTTONWOOD — Three top-15 finishers weren’t enough to put the Lakeview boys golf team on top at the Lakeview boys invitational Tuesday afternoon as the Lakers fell one stroke shy of first-place Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa.

Yellow Medicine East freshman Cooper McCosh took first place in the tournament, shooting a 76 on the day to tie with BBE’s Brady Schwinghammer and Osakis’ Chase Triebenbach.

“Cooper played very well today, well within his abilities,” YME head coach Ben Lecy said, adding that some of his scores earlier in the season were affected by strong winds, but today he was able to put it all together.

“Little over an hour delay [due to lightning] and sometimes you worry about those kind of things when you’re having a good round, but he picked it up right where he was at,” Lecy said, adding that Nick Moritz also used the delay to regroup and came back out even stronger after.

Behind McCosh’s big day, the Sting took fourth in the 10-team tournament with a total score of 345.

James Peterson and Moritz placed 16th and 19th for the Sting with 86 and 88 strokes respectively while Brayton Hammer rounded out the Sting scorers with 95 strokes.

“[James] is our go-to guy to keep our scores in that competitive nature,” Lecy said. “James has been our real anchor here.”

Carson Boe led the Lakers again, tying Lac qui Parle Valley’s Carson Besonen for fourth with 79 strokes. Ethan Schwankl took eighth for Lakeview with an 81 while Jordan Fischer and Lane Arends carded an 85 and 88 respectively to place 14th and 19th.

“For the most part, everyone did well with the conditions we were given,” Lakeview head coach Sarah Wahlstrom said, adding that everyone had a few areas that could be improved upon but that the performances were overall positive.

The Lakers compiled a team score of 333 over 18 holes. BBE finished just ahead at 332 while Osakis placed third at 339.

Whalstrom said that it’s good to see the team compete and know they’re right there with the other top teams.

Dawson-Boyd’s Drew Hjelmeland tied with Russell-Tyler-Ruthton’s Chase Christensen for 10th place with 83 strokes.

Dawson-Boyd placed sixth on the day with a score of 366. Evan Mork placed 16th for the Blackjacks with an 86 while Carson Stratmoen placed 21st with an 89. Landon Kemen was Dawson-Boyd’s fourth scorer with a 108 to place 49th.

“It was kind of a weird day where it was warm with a very light breeze when we first started, maybe a little humid, then we had the system come through, so it was kind of like playing two different golf courses after coming back after the lightning delay,” DB head coach Cory Larson said. “I thought all the kids played well, still trying to get a feel for the short game… but overall I thought it was good, maybe just need to clean some things up.”

RTR put together a 391 team score to place eighth. Camden Hansen placed 38th with a 101 while Jonah and Isaac Norgaard placed 42nd and 44th with a 103 and 104 respectively.

Jack Abrahamson placed 14th for the Canby Lancers with an 85 and Daven VanEngen shot a 92 to place 23rd. Lincoln and Lane Fink shot a 95 and 102 respectively to give Canby a team score of 372, good for seventh.

Minneota rounded out the area teams with a 407 team score. Anthony Rybinski placed 18th with an 87 while Max Rost placed 22nd with a 91.

The Lakeview boys golf team will next compete on Thursday at 4:30 p.m. alongside Canby, RTR, TMB, and Minneota at Yellow Medicine East. Dawson-Boyd will compete in a tournament at Stoney Creek Golf Course at the same time.

Starting at $3.95/week.
