Houseman’s no hitter leads Marshall in dominant win over Waseca 13-0
Marshall Morgan bjella squares up a pitch she roped to centerfield for an RBI single in a 13-0 Saturday morning victory over Waseca High School.
MARSHALL- What was originally supposed to be scheduled as a doubleheader turned into a single game in which the Marshall Tigers softball team defeated the Waseca Bluejays 13-0 in five innings on Saturday morning. Olivia Houseman threw a no hitter and it is the second no hitter that Marshall has thrown this season.
The Tigers scored their 13 runs in the first three innings of play including an eight run third inning. Halla Casavan and Randi Wendorff both hit home runs in the game and had three RBIs apiece.
The Tigers had only three hits but had eight runs scored in the third inning. The Bluejays walked five Marshall batters. Along with Casavan home run, Brielle Riess hit a rope out to deep left center field for a two RBI double. Morgan Bjella also had an RBI single and made it 13-0 after three
The Tigers defense held and so did the Bluejays, setting up potentially the ending of the game and Olivia Houseman no hitter opportunity.
The first batter Olivia Houseman struck out and it was down to two outs for the feat to be accomplished. Then the next batter hit the ball to shortstop Wendorff but the ball went off her glove and the runner was aboard. That was awarded an error instead of a base hit. Olivia went on to strike out the next batter and had a groundout to end the game in five innings winning 13-0. This was the second no hitter thrown this season by Marshall, first being by Morgan Bjella.
Head coach of the Tigers Jack Houseman spoke on his team s performance and the two no hitters thrown this season by his players.
“I thought our girls did well getting on base and getting a lead,” Jack Houseman said. “We had a lot of runners on base which is good. Olivia pitched good today, worked ahead of the batters, did a great job of closing out the game for us. Bjella and Olivia are experienced pitching in a lot of games. They know what they’re doing and we are proud of them with all they do in the off-season to prepare for these moments. We got five more games next week and keep playing solid defense. Clean up our defense. We have to continue to work on the little things. We’re looking forward to finishing the season strong.”
Olivia Houseman threw a complete game shutout walking two batters and striking out nine in the no hitter performance. She spoke on her game and what was working for her
“Well I had a lot of fun today,” Olivia Houseman said. Didn’t realize I had a no hitter to be honest until someone told me after the game.It is a cool thing. My riseball was working today and then worked in a few screwballs. It gives me a lot of confidence knowing that my teammates have my back. It helps being up there pitching when having a lead.”
The Marshall Tigers will be back in action on Tuesday as they play an out of conference opponent hosting the Wabasso Rabbits.
The first pitch is at 5 p.m.
