Vold, RRC/WWG start season hot

HERON LAKE — Quintyn Vold threw three no-hit innings to help the Red Rock Central/Westbrook-Walnut Grove baseball team to open its season with a lopsided 11-5 road win over Mountain Lake Area-Comfrey Tuesday afternoon.

The Falcons trailed 5-4 when Vold entered the game in the fifth inning. From there, Vold struck out five of the 12 batters he faced and held the Wolverines scoreless while closing out the game. A pair of walks were the only MLAC runners to reach base in Vold’s relief appearance.

RRC/WWG capitalized on a Wolverine error in the top of the fifth to take control of the game. With runners on first and second, Jayden Lang reached base on an error by the MLAC first baseman and Keaton Skarupa scored to tie the game at 5-5. From there, Dan Kleven hit the go-ahead RBI to score Hudsen Jenniges and put the Falcons on top.

The run was one of three times Jenniges rounded home plate in the game. He also hit an RBI triple in the third inning and a two-run single in the second.

As a pitcher, Jenniges took the mound for two innings, striking out four and allowing two earned runs.

Kleven also reached base on an RBI walk in the seventh inning and went on to score himself.

Ashton Juhnke started the game on the mound for SMSU, throwing two innings with one earned run — and one unearned — while striking out four. He allowed one hit and two walks in the start. As a batter, Juhnke also hit a triple in the sixth inning.

The Falcons exploded for five runs in the top of the seventh inning. Five straight batters for RRC/WWG walked or were hit by a pitch and all scored to take command. Vold struck out two and forced a ground out in the bottom of the inning to shut down any hope for a comeback.

Isaac Simonson singled twice and scored twice in the first two innings to start the season hot for the Falcons.

Red Rock Central/Westbrook-Walnut Grove (1-0) hosts Edgerton/Southwest MN Christian for its home opener in Westbrook Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
