Marshall starts year with 14-1 road win

LUVERNE — The Marshall baseball team started its season hot with a 14-1 blowout win over Luverne Thursday night. The game was originally scheduled to be played in Marshall but was moved earlier in the week due to weather conditions.
Parker Schmitt took the mound and pitched five innings for the Tigers. He allowed two hits and struck out seven while allowing one unearned run in the fourth inning when Marshall lead 8-0.
Tyler Maeyaert was a hit machine for Marshall. He got a hit in four of his five at-bats, doubling twice while driving in three RBIs. He also scored twice himself.
Lincoln Graven, Andrew Wallen and Jonathan Gruhot also each had two hits in the game. Gruhot and Graven each had a double.
In addition to his two hits, Wallen reached base twice on a walk as well. When on base, he made the most of his opportunities, stealing a base twice in the game and scoring twice.
Karson Rowe closed out the game for Marshall with a scoreless sixth inning.
Marshall (1-0) will look to stay hot when it goes on the road to face New Prague today at 4:30 p.m.

WESTBROOK — The Red Rock Central/Westbrook-Walnut Grove baseball team couldn’t get anything going offensively in its game against Edgerton/Southwest Minnesota Christian Thursday afternoon, finishing the game with no extra-base hits in its 6-2 home loss.
The Falcons struck out nine times in the game. Ashton Juhnke was the only player with multiple hits on the night, going 3-4 from the plate with three singles.
The Flying Dutchmen wasted no time getting their offense going. They scored twice in the first inning to take a 2-0 lead and never looked back.
Hudsen Jenniges scored for RRC/WWG in the second inning after walking, stealing second base, advancing to third on a fielders choice, and then stealing home.
Jake Jackson scored the Falcons’ other run of the game after reaching on an error and then scored when Jayden Lang reached base on a fielding error.
Isaac Simonson started the game on the mound for the Falcons, pitching 2 1/3 innings while allowing 10 base runners and four earned runs before Dan Kleven took over.
Kleven pitched the remaining 4 2/3, allowing one earned run while striking out six.
Red Rock Central/Westbrook-Walnut Grove (1-1) returns to action Monday at 4:30 p.m. when they go on the road to face Murray County Central.
MCC 34, HLOF 0
HERON LAKE — Dylan Kluis and Christian Tentinger each contributed four hits to help the Murray County Central baseball team start its season off with a 34-0 road win over Heron Lake-Okabena/Fulda Thursday afternoon.
Tentinger led the Rebels’ offense with a home run, a double and a stolen base. He also reached after being hit by a pitch. Tentinger finished the game with four RBI and crossed the plate himself five times.
Kluis hit a triple and knocked home three RBIs. Kluis pitched three scoreless innings on the mound, striking out seven and allowing no hits. His two walks were the only HLOF runners to reach base in the game.
Jaden Deacon hit a triple in the game and finished the day 2-4 from the plate with three runs scored and a pair of RBIs. Abe Paulzine doubled twice and drove in three runs while Owen Gillette doubled once and tied Tentinger with a game-high four RBIs.
The Rebels rarely swung and missed. In 48 team at-bats, MCC struck out five times. Conversely, HLOF struck out nine times in 16 at-bats.
MCC combined to go 29-48 from the plate with five players reaching on walks or being hit by a pitch.
Murray County Central (1-0) will face off against Red Rock Central/Westbrook-Walnut Grove in Slayton on Monday.
Wabasso 20, MVL 8
NEW ULM — Chase Irlbeck led the Rabbits’ offense with a home run and a pair of doubles to help the Wabasso baseball team to a 20-8 road win over Minnesota Valley Lutheran in its season opener Thursday afternoon.
Irlbeck’s four runs scored were a team-high. Also reaching base multiple times, Joe Liebl finished the game with three singles and Adryen Tietz hit a triple and a single.
Lieble started the game on the mound for Wabasso, pitching four innings and allowing four runs. He struck out six and allowed two hits, but his five walks resulted in four MVL runs and he exited without a decision.
Tietz pitched two innings and struck out six. He allowed four runs but was credited with the win after a late offensive explosion from Wabasso.
The Rabbits scored 15 runs in the final two innings to put the game away.
Noah Anderson put the game away with two strikeouts in the final inning.
Wabasso (1-0) will go on the road to face Tracy-Milroy-Balaton today at 4:30 p.m.
