DeSmet shines for Minneota/Canby in two-start doubleheader

ORTONVILLE — Brooke DeSmet pitched 10 innings in Minneota/Canby’s doubleheader against Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley and Ortonville Friday afternoon to help the Vikings salvage a split on the day. Minneota/Canby fell short against CGB 8-7 in the early matchup before bouncing back for an 8-1 win in five innings in the late game.
DeSmet went the distance in game one against CGB, allowing nine hits and five earned runs while striking out five in the back-and-forth affair.
CGB led 6-4 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, but a three-run outburst from the Vikings game M/C a 7-6 lead heading into the final two frames.
Yet, the Vikings were unable to hold on and CGB scored a run in both the sixth and seventh innings while shutting out the Vikings.
Kiersyn Hulzebos led the M/C offense early with two hits, including a triple, as well as a run and an RBI. AshleeAnn Frazeur and Rachel Fairchild each had a pair of hits and a double, while Frazeur sent home a pair of RBIs.
In the second game, Minneota/Canby fired on all cylinders against Ortonville. DeSmet pitched three innings while allowing one hit and no earned runs. Coming in for the relief appearance after one unearned run crossed the plate, Joelle Otto pitched two hitless innings with a walk and a strikeout to close out the win over the Trojans.
Frazeur stayed hot in game two, finishing with the same two-hit, two-RBI stat line with a double.
Faith Myhre and Isabelle Hulzebos also each finished with a pair of hits.
Minneota (1-1) will play again on Tuesday, traveling to Granite Falls for a double-header against Yellow Medicine East. The first game will get started at 4:30 p.m.
Wabasso 4, MCC 1
WABASSO — The Murray County Central softball team had no answer for Wabasso’s Avery Carlson Friday afternoon, whose performance on the mound paved the way for a 4-1 Rabbits win.
Carlson pitched the full seven innings while allowing just three hits on the night. She also struck out ten to shut down the MCC offense. As a batter, Carlson also singled.
Kelsey Frank was the first Rabbit to cross the plate on the night. After singling in the third inning, Frank was able to cross home plate after Sara Carlson bunted and Frank was able to advance after the first baseman was overthrown.
Annabelle Struntz singled twice in the game, scoring in the sixth inning to put Wabasso up 4-1.
Sophia Hanna scored Wabasso’s other run after the game’s brief rain delay when she reached base on an error and later advanced to home.
Wabasso (2-0) will go on the road to face Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s Monday at 5 p.m.
