Mustang tennis splits weekend series in St. Peter

ST. PETER — The Southwest Minnesota State tennis team defeated Minnesota State Moorhead 6-1 Saturday afternoon in the Swanson Tennis Center before falling 4-0 against UMary on Sunday morning.

SMSU won two of three doubles matches to earn the team point against MSU Moorhead and then captured five of six singles matches.

Courtenay Leonard and Gabriela Almeida cruised to a 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles, while SMSU’s No. 3 team of Roz Oye and Faith Madikwe earned a 6-4 victory to give SMSU a 1-0 advantage.

Madikwe and Maura Wiens both earned three-set victories in singles play for the Mustangs. Madikwe won 7-5, 5-7, 7-5 at No. 4, with Wiens securing a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 win at No. 6.

Joana Reis Indio earned a straight-set 6-1, 7-5 win at No. 2 with teammate Camila Paccieri also winning in straight sets at No. 5 by scores of 7-5, 6-1. Almeida finished her day with a 2-0 mark by winning 7-5, 6-3 at No. 3.

In the second matchup of the weekend, UMary (6-5, 5-2 NSIC) won the doubles point with a 6-1 victory at No. 2 and 6-3 win at No. 3, with the No. 1 match not finished.

In singles play, UMary won in straight sets at No. 2, 3 and 4 to secure the team victory. No. 1, 5 and 6 singles were all unfinished.

SMSU (3-12, 2-4 NSIC) continues NSIC play in Rogers on Friday when they face off against Minnesota Duluth before playing ST. Cloud State Saturday morning.
