SMSU track ready for NSIC meet
MARSHALL — The Southwest Minnesota State University women’s and men’s track and field teams will travel to Mankato, Minn., this Saturday and Sunday competing at the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Indoor Championships at Myers Field House on the campus of Minnesota State University. The meet was delayed one day due to the snowstorm in the Upper Midwest.
For the SMSU women’s team, Sierra Clifford is seeded third in the 600-meters with the fifth fasted time in the NSIC at 1:37.30.
Shealyn Tom enters the championship with the seventh-best mark in the pole vault at 3.44m.
In the shot put, Nadia Sanford is ninth at 13.34m, with Emily Lorentz in 11th at 13.07m. Sanford is also seeded 11th in the weight throw at 16.05m.
Hannah Koepfinger will also compete for the Mustangs in the pentathlon.
The SMSU women’s team will also have relay teams compete in the 4×400 and the 4,000-meter distance medley.
On the men’s side, Carl Swedzinski opens the championship with the sixth best toss in the weight throw at 17.74m, while teammate Tyler Nebelung seeded 10th at 16.63m.
Hunter Smith has recorded the seventh-best height in the pole vault at 4.57m, while McKallen Smith is seeded eighth in the high jump with a mark of 1.96m.
Tyler Smith is seeded 15th in the 200-meters at 22.66 and 18th in the 60-meters at 7.07.
The SMSU men’s 4×400 relay team will also compete on Sunday.
At the 2022 NSIC Indoor Championship, SMSU finished 14th on the women’s side, while the SMSU men’s team finished 11th overall.
The heptathlon begins at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, followed by field events starting at 12 p.m. and running events at 1 p.m.
Action continues on Sunday with the pentathlon starting at 9 a.m., field events beginning at 1 p.m. and running events getting underway at 1:30 p.m. The team awards presentation is expected to take place at 6:25 p.m. on Sunday.
All-NSIC performers consist of the top three place winners in each event and the members of the top two relay teams from the meet. A total of 15 schools will compete for the 2023 women’s championship, while the men’s championship field will include 12 teams.
