Hat trick of hat tricks

Loft, Mauch and Holmgren notch hat tricks, lead Tigers to 3A semis

MARSHALL — Regan Loft scored three points in the first seven minutes of play to help propel the Marshall girls hockey team to a 17-1 home win over Worthington in the Section 3A Quarterfinals Thursday night.

Loft scored on a pair of goals on fast breaks and an assist from behind the net to Lily Verkinderen to help Marshall to an early 4-0 lead. She finished the game with 6 points and four goals.

Brooklyn Mauch notched a goal and an assist in the first period before finding the back of the net two more times to finish with a hat trick as well.

Eliza Holmgren rounded out the trio of Tiger hat tricks, scoring a pair of goals in the second before capping off the hat trick in the third period.

“Our goal was to get everyone involved with clean breakouts, clean through the neutral zone, move the puck and get some goals,” Marshall assistant coach Dave Coudert said.

Marshall outshot Worthington 45-5 in the game. The Trojans could not get off a shot on goal for the first 15 minutes of the second period and not until the final minute in the third period. The Trojans’ last shot came with 50 seconds remaining on a running clock and gave the Trojans their lone goal of the game.

Lily Verkinderen, Kendal Beernaert, and Eliza Holmgren each scored a pair of goals in the game. Beernaert was also credited with a pair of assists and Verkinderen was credited with one.

“It’s nice to get this game, but I hope we don’t get too overconfident with a win like this. It’s all about Saturday,” Coudert said.

The Marshall girls hockey team (11-11-3) will travel to New Ulm to face off against the Eagles in the Section 3A Semifinals Saturday at 7 p.m.

The Semifinals matchup will mark the third time the two teams have faced this season. The Tigers fell 2-1 to New Ulm in Marshall on Dec. 1 and tied the Eagles 0-0 in New Ulm on Jan. 5.

“It’s going to be about making sure we get quality shots, get them on net and clean up rebounds,” Coudert said of the team’s gameplan. “We’re the type of team that just gets greasy, dirty goals, awful rebounds and stuff like that. We like to work down low on the net and work out from there… I don’t think New Ulm has seen our best and hopefully, they see it on Saturday.”
