RTR knocks off DB, remains undefeated

DAWSON — The Russell-Tyler-Ruthton boys basketball team pulled away in the second half to steal a 64-53 win on the road from Dawson-Boyd and remain undefeated on the season.
Drew Werkman led the Knights’ charge with 20 points on 10-21 shooting from the field. He also recorded a game-high 13 rebounds, including six on the offensive glass.
Cody Wichmann also recorded a double-double for RTR with 19 points on 46% from the field and 10 rebounds.
Brayson Boike and Drew Hjelmeland led the Blackjacks in scoring with 15 and 14 points respectively, but their efforts weren’t enough. Hjelmeland shot 50% from the field while Boike knocked down five 3-pointers.
Boike’s 12 rebounds were a team-high. While Hjelmeland is usually a dominant rebounder, the RTR bigs were able to limit him to three rebounds on the night.
Russell-Tyler-Ruthton (8-0) will try to extend their streak when they host Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg Friday at 7:30 p.m., while Dawson-Boyd (6-3) will try to bounce back when they go on the road to face Minneota.
KMS 62, TMB 40
KERKHOVEN — After a close first half, the Tracy-Milroy-Balaton boys basketball team struggled in the second half of their loss to Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunberg Patriots, 62-40, on Tuesday evening.
The Panthers scored 29 points in the opening half, but just11 in the second. Sophomore guard Trevor Smith scored a team-high 28 points in the contest but only shot 38% from the field and had five turnovers.
The rest of the Panthers shot 6-27 from the field scoring, 12 points in the ballgame.
Dalton Timmerman went scoreless but did have a team-high nine rebounds.
TMB Panthers are back in action on Friday when they host the Lac Qui Parle Valley Eagles at 7:30 p.m.
MCC 65, MLA-C 59
MOUNTAIN LAKE — The Murray County Central Rebels boys basketball team completed a comeback from being down seven at the half to win 65-59 over the MLA-C Wolverines on Tuesday evening.
In the first half, the Wolverines held a slim lead over the Rebels 29-22. The Rebels erupted with 43 second-half points to come back and secure the victory.
Christian Tentinger had a monster game scoring 26 points and grabbing 16 rebounds. His teammate Tanner Graphenteen scored 15 points and led the team with five steals! Aidan Dierks also scored in double figures with 10 points.
MCC Rebels will be back in action on Friday evening as they host the Red Rock Central Falcons at 7:15 p.m.
RCW 67, YME 62
RENVILLE– The Yellow Medicine East Sting boys basketball team was defeated by the Renville County West Jaguars 67-62 on Tuesday evening.
Bryce Sneller led his team in scoring with 22 points and rebounds with 13. Sneller also shot 76% from the field.
DJ Whitebuffalo scored 18 points and Cody Dahlager had 10 points, six rebounds, and a team-high five assists.
YME is back in action on Friday evening as they host the Central Minnesota Christian Bluejays at 7:30 p.m.
CMC 56, Minneota 54
PRINSBURG– The Minneota Vikings boys basketball team lost a close battle to the Central Minnesota Christian Bluejays 56-54 on Tuesday evening.
Payton Sheik led the Vikings in scoring with 20 points and 14 rebounds in the contest. His teammate, Maxwell Rost, had 13 points and six assists but only shot 45% from the field.
Anthony Rybinski scored 11 points and eight rebounds in the loss
The Minneota Vikings will be back in action on Friday at 7:15 p.m. when they host Dawson-Boyd.
Girls basketball
YME 70, RCW 50
RENVILLE– The Yellow Medicine East Sting girls basketball team defeated the Renville County West Jaguars 70-50 on Tuesday evening.
The Sting had four players score in doubles figures, led by senior guard Stella Schuler with 20 points. Senior forward Hannah Stark had 19 points, freshman Hope Stark had 13, and freshman guard Bayli Sneller had 12 points.
Hannah and Hope Stark also had six steals apiece in the ballgame. The Sting did this with just six players active for tonight’s game.
YME is back in action on Thursday evening when they host the Dawson-Boyd Blackjacks at 7:15 p.m.
RTR 45, TMB 44
TRACY — The Russell-Tyler-Ruthton girls basketball team squeaked out a road win over Tracy-Milroy-Balaton Tuesday night by a score of 45-44.
The Knights trailed 45-44 at halftime but scored 26 second-half points to secure the win.
Allyson Nelson was unstoppable in the paint for RTR. She scored a game-high 21 points. She was held to 38% from the field, but drew contact to get to the charity stripe, where she converted nine of her 10 attempts.
Nelson finished one rebound shy of a double-double, grabbing nine total rebounds on the night.
Jordan Munson filled up the scoring column for TMB yet again with a team-high 16 points. Yet, her scoring was inefficient; she shot 5-24 from the field.
Munson was also the game’s second-leading rebounder, with eight boards.
On the defensive end, Munson’s three blocks and five steals were both game-highs.
Gabi Borresen scored 1 point, but contributed to RTR’s win in other ways. She finished the game with three steals, five rebounds, and an assist.
RTR (7-3) will try to follow up their nail-biter win with another strong outing when they host Lac qui Parle Valley Thursday at 7:15 p.m. TMB (5-4) will try to stop the bleeding after losing four of their last five when they host MACCRAY Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
JCC 76, MCC 41
JACKSON– The Murray County Central Rebels were blown out by the Jackson County Central Huskies, 76-41, on Tuesday evening.
The Rebels played a close first half with the Huskies, only trailing by nine at the intermission. However, the game got away fast from the Rebels as they were outscored 45-19 in the second half.
Jayda Hollowell led the team in scoring with 12 points and had five rebounds in the loss. Her teammate Seanna Swenson scored eight points and had a team-high 11 rebounds on the night.
MCC Rebels are back in action on Thursday evening as they host the Red Rock Central Falcons at 7:15 p.m.
Wabasso 56, MVL 41
NEW ULM — The Wabasso girls basketball team snapped their four-game losing streak Tuesday night when they went on the road and defeated Minnesota Valley Lutheran, 56-41.
Kelsey Frank was outstanding both in terms of volume and efficiency when it came to scoring. She scored 23 points on the night on 10-17 from the field while also knocking down a 3-pointer.
Frank also made an impact defensively, finishing the contest with six steals.
Sophia Hanna contributed another 16 points for the Rabbits, but her main value was as a distributor. She finished with seven assists and three turnovers; she made up for the three turnovers with two steals on the defensive end.
Both teams shot 48% from the field, but the Rabbits shot 33% from behind the arc–compared to MVL’s 22%–to pull ahead.
The Wabasso Rabbits (3-5) will try to begin a positive streak when they host Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart Friday at 6:30 p.m.
