Luverne takes down Tigers twice
LUVERNE — The Marshall girls basketball team was unable to come out on top in a hard-fought road battle against Luverne, dropping the match 46-42.
Lexi Bednarek scored 17 points for Marshall on 5-9 shooting from 3-point range while Bri Simpson scored another 12 points for Marshall from inside the arc.
Yet, the Tigers were unable to get the rest of their roster involved offensively. No other Tiger scored five or more points in the game.
Despite the offensive struggles, the Tigers were efficient with their possessions. They turned the ball over six times on the night, while the Cardinals committed 14 turnovers.
Rebounding hurt Marshall in the game. They lost the rebounding battle 19-15, and no Tiger had more than three rebounds.
Following the loss, Marshall (4-2) will compete against Stewartville at the Southern Minnesota Hoops Fest in Kasson-Mantorville High School at 3:15 p.m.
Renville County West 63,
Red Rock Central 51
RENVILLE — Sondra Rindflesch’s massive double-double wasn’t enough for the Red Rock Central girls basketball team as they fell short on the road against Renville County West, 63-51.
Rindflesch scored 30 points in the match, more than the rest of the Falcons combined, while also coming down with 17 rebounds. Still, it was not enough to secure the win.
The Red Rock Central Falcons (1-9) will host Edgerton Monday at 7:30 p.m. with the hope of turning their team’s luck around.
Boys Basketball
Luverne 58, Marshall 57
LUVERNE — The Marshall boys basketball team came up just short of their third straight win with a 58-57 loss on the road against Luverne Friday night.
Tyler Maeyaert and Salman Osman each contributed 3-point shooting for the Tigers on the night, going 3-5 and 2-2 from the field respectively. Maeyaert finished with 13 points and Osman with 10, but a 26-point outing from Luverne’s Gannon Arhendt was too much for Marshall to overcome.
The Tigers didn’t turn the ball over often, finishing the night with five team turnovers, but they didn’t pass well either. Osman and Andrew Elton had the Tigers’ only two assists.
Osman and Elton had active hands on defense. Osman came away with four steals and Elton had another two.
Elton led the Tigers on the glass with seven rebounds, including three on the offensive end of the court.
The Tigers’ shooting was spotty, to say the least. They shot 41% from 3-point range, but 49% from the free-throw line.
Following the loss, the Tigers (4-4) will look to get back above .500 when they face Redwood Valley on the road Tuesday at 7:15 p.m.
Canby 62, LQPV 51
CANBY — A hot shooting night from Zach Ourada led the Canby boys basketball team to a 62-51 win over Lac qui Parle Valley to get back above .500 on the season.
Ourada shot 4-7 from beyond the arc on the night en route to a 16-point performance. He also had a team-high 10 rebounds.
Michael Tol was an effective distributor off the bench for the Lancers, finishing the game with five assists and no turnovers.
Trevor Gray’s shots weren’t falling on the night, but he found a way to help his team win on the defensive end. He came away with three steals and a block, as well as seven total rebounds.
Following the win, Canby (4-3) will go on the road to face Minneota Saturday at 7 p.m.
Murray County Central 42, HBC 29
SLAYTON — The Murray County Central boys basketball team bounced back from their 21-point loss to Pipestone Area on Monday with a 42-29 win over Hills-Beaver Creek Friday night.
The Rebels had a fresh face as their leading scorer with a 21-point performance from Aidan Dierks. Dierks also dished out a team-high four assists on the night.
Christian Tentinger also had a well-rounded game for the Rebels. He was second on the team in points and assists, with 17 points and three assists, and his five rebounds and seven steals were both team highs.
Tanner Graphenteen scored 14 points, as well as five assists and five steals.
Following the win, MCC (5-2) will travel to Mt. Lake to take on Mountain Lake Area-Comfrey Tuesday at 6 p.m.
Dawson-Boyd 71, TMB 40
TRACY — The Dawson-Boyd boys basketball team took a 71-40 road win over Tracy-Milroy-Balaton behind scoring outbursts from Keegon Wicht, Brayson Boike and Drew Hjelmeland.
Wicht, Boike, and Drew each showed an ability to score on three levels in the game. Boike scored a game-high 20 points on 3-3 shooting from beyond the arc, Wicht scored 19 on 5-9 from 3-point range, and Hjelmeland scored 18 on 3-7 from 3-point range.
Hjelmeland also had a big game down low, grabbing 10 rebounds on the night.
On the defensive end, Wicht and Levi Olson were thieves in the night, coming away with four steals apiece. Perhaps more impressive was that Wicht did this without committing a foul.
Alex Munson led the Panthers in scoring with 12 points, followed closely by 10 from Trevor Smith. Munson’s 10 rebounds were tied for a game-high.
As a team, the Panthers finished with two assists to 24 turnovers on the night.
The Blackjacks held TMB to 27% shooting from the field.
The Blackjacks (5-2) will try to ride Wicht, Boike, and Hjelmelands’ hot hands to another win when they go on the road to face Southwest Minnesota Christian Saturday at 5:15 p.m.
The Panthers (1-7) will have the weekend to recover before they try to bounce back when they host Westbrook-Walnut Grove Monday at 7:30 p.m.
