Length and size proved costly for Mustangs in loss to Wolves 82-62

Sophomore Mustang guard Hannah Parsley (4) pushes the ball in transition and going up for an easy layup in Saturday’s evening action against Northern State.

MARSHALL– The Southwest Minnesota State Mustangs womens basketball dropped a home contest to the Northern State Wolves 82-62 on Saturday evening.

The Mustangs were coming off a thrilling overtime win against the MSU-Moorhead Spuds 82-75 on Friday night. However, the Mustangs couldn’t replicate the same energy and fighting uphill the entire game.

The Wolves used their length and size to bother the Mustangs making it difficult to score. In the first half, the Mustangs kept it close only trailing by five with Bri Stoltzman having a team-high nine points in the opening half.

However, the Wolves started to take control in the second half scoring 53 of their 82 points.

The Wolves continuously went down low to Kailee Oliverson and she connected on 53% of her field goals finishing with 21 points. Her teammate Rianna Filippi was even deadlier, shooting 60% from the field, having 12 rebounds plus six assists, and giving the Mustangs all kinds of fits.

The Wolves stretched their lead to 10 by the end of the third quarter but the Mustangs would cut the lead in the fourth, getting hot from three

The Mustangs cut the lead to four with three from Hannah Parsley, Jenna Borchers, and Sam Wall. Head coach Tom Webb pumped up the crowd you could feel the team surging on a comeback. Ultimately, four is as close as the Mustangs would get. The Wolves finished on a 22-6 run to close out the game and turn a close one into a runaway.

The Mustangs couldn’t handle the combination of Filippi and Oliverson in this matchup causing them to lose by 20, 82-62.

Three Mustang players finished with double digits in scoring: Parsley (16), Wall (15), and Stoltzman (13). Parsley also led the team in rebounds with five in the contest. The Mustangs defense allows 21 or more points in three of the four quarters. In the second quarter, the Mustangs allow eight points

“We went 1-12 for three in the first half and that got kind of down, frustrated,” Webb said. “Second game in a row we haven’t shot the ball well. I haven’t put our players in the correct spots and that’s on me, it’s my fault. On defense, we didn’t do what we were supposed to do. We have to be mentally tough, locked in, and get those things taken care of. Don’t let the things that you can’t control, control you was the message after the game and that message starts with me.”

The Mustangs will have a week to practice and get ready for another home weekend of games facing St. Cloud State Huskies on Friday evening and Minnesota Duluth on Saturday evening.

Starting at $3.95/week.
