MARSHALL– Senior Marissa Talamantes signs her letter of intent to play soccer at Northwestern University on Friday morning. Talamantes is the first soccer player in the program at Marshall High School to sign.
Talamantes celebrated with friends and family. Northwestern University is located in Orange City, Iowa.
"When I walked onto campus at Northwestern, it just felt like home," Talamantes said. "The coach is amazing. She reminded me of my high school coach Jose because she was very passionate about soccer. She was welcoming and my Northwestern teammates were welcoming as well. I had a few options but Northwestern felt right. It is a small campus, it is close to home, and I wanted to go to the same school as my sister, so it worked out."
Talamantes credited Sondy Cayo, owner of One Journey Fit, and Talamantes's trainer for being one of her biggest supporters.
"Sondy told me since my sophomore year that I was going to play collegiate soccer," Talamantes said. "He pushed me and been there every step of the way."
Also, those in attendance were Talamantes coaches Jose Losada Montero and Robert Goode Jr. Talamantes added that her coaches have also been a huge influence on her and exhibited a lot of passion for the game of soccer.
"I think it is the job of coaches, not just here at Marshall High School but at the local organization working with these kids," Montero said. "We're all very proud and we hope that the young girls in town see what the potential that the program has. As for Marissa, she has been the captain for us. She's a role model for her teammates, she works hard, and she's the first to arrive for training and the last one to leave. She is a competitor and I am really happy she is getting this opportunity."
