Wabasso — The Lakeview Lakers boys’ basketball team dominated the Adrian Dragons 71-49 on Saturday morning.

Nathan Fenske scored 32 points to lead the Lakers to victory.

“It was really my teammates getting me the ball in transition,” Fenske said. “We as a team have good chemistry together and we like to play fast in transition.”

The Lakers started the game on a 13-2 run behind an aggressive press that caused the Dragons to turn the ball over multiple times.

“With our speed, athleticism and depth, we want to see teams run with us,” Lakers head coach Jared Keaveny said. “We want to create opportunities. We have a lot of playmakers on this team. When we get into transition, it forces the defense to sprint back always and we feel that benefits us a lot.

The Lakers also exhibited patience against a Dragons zone defense by swinging the ball and knocking down open shots. When the ball was passed inside the zone, the Lakers made the Dragons pay by scoring and getting offensive rebounds for second-chance points. The Lakers lead at halftime 41-26. Of those 41 points, Fenske scored 20.

In the second half, the Lakers’ lead ballooned to 30, and, with the game well in hand, they cruised to victory.

“When you win by 22 points, score 71 points and hold your opponent in 49 points, you obviously did some good things,” Keaveny said. “We got some big goals this year and we’re always talking about raising our play. There are things that we have to sharpen and stay more focused on. I think in the second half, we lost our focus a little bit. We did some great things but we can always be better.”

The Lakers hit six 3-pointers in the game and amassed 20 offensive rebounds. The Lakers also had 11 steals and took five charges in the contest.

The Lakeview Lakers (2-0) and will host the defending section champions Russell-Tyler-Ruthton Knights in their home opener next Friday at 7:15 p.m.
