MARSHALL — The Southwest Minnesota State University Mustangs football team is on a four-game winning streak. The Mustangs dominated the Upper Iowa University Peacocks 47-7 on homecoming weekend, Saturday evening.

The Mustangs jumped on them early behind starting quarterback Justus McComb 34 yard touchdown run which gave the Mustangs the early lead.

From that point on it was all SMSU.

Followed by the McComb touchdown run, the Mustangs would have a nine-play, 50 yards drive with also a seven-play, 80 yards drive both resulting in Peter Osman one-yard touchdowns. SMSU would lead 21-0 in the second quarter.

Just eight seconds later, linebacker Onte Burns would intercept a pass from the Peacocks and take it to the house from thirty yards out. SMSU in the second quarter turned a defense of the Mustangs forced two interceptions and also had two sacks in the ballgame. They would only surrender a late touchdown when the game was well in hand.

The Mustangs did this without two-time NSIC player of the week starting running Jesse Sherwood as he is battling an Injury and was held out of Saturday’s game. Head coach Scoot Underwood spoke on the team’s victory and next-man-up mentality.

“I think we made some big plays tonight,” Underwood said. “We are trying to develop that culture of different people making plays across the board. It is next man up, we’re going to have injuries in different places and different spots. We are excited to see when guys step up when the opportunity is presented.”

The SMSU Mustangs football team (4-1) will travel next to Sioux Falls to face off against the University of Sioux Falls next Saturday afternoon.
