COTTONWOOD — “I told our guys the target is on their back but since we won then the target is on our back and I like that.”

These were words spoken by Dawson-Boyd Blackjacks head coach Cory Larson after an upset victory over the Lakeview Lakers 16-8 on Friday. The Blackjacks exacted some revenge on the Lakers this season after losing last year 28-22.

The Blackjacks scored on the opening possession with a 27 yard run by Levi Olson, giving them the early lead. Olson would add another touchdown a d have a total of 87 yards rushing. Holt Larson, running back for the Blackjacks, was held to 61 yards. The Blackjacks also converted key third downs all throughout the game, which wás different than the last meeting when the Blackjacks went 1-7.

The Lakers couldn’t find any rhythm offensively and had only one big play the entire night. Nathan Fenske who came in with 10 touchdowns and four straight multi touchdown games, was blanketed by Brayson Boike, who matched up with him all game.

Larson talked about the victory and taking away explosive plays from Lakeview.

“We had to take away their big plays tonight,” Larson added. “Our defense was tremendous tonight, what a great effort by our defense. They’re a great football team with great speed and physicality. For us to get a win here is pretty big getting past the midpoint of the season.”

Head coach of the Lakers, Scott Hanson, talked about hi team performance and being able to handle adversity.

“We couldn’t get anything going offensively and credit to Dawson-Boyd defense,” Hanson said. “One of the things about tonight’s game is we don’t make any excuses. We didn’t play our best football game. We grew up a lot tonight because things got tough and now we understand that we have to do the things to persevere to win a football game.”

Owen Louwagie for the Lakers, threw for 94 yards, and threw for one interception. The Lakers only rushed for 85 yards on 28 carries. The Blackjacks limited them to three yards per carry.

The Lakeview Lakers (4-1) will travel to Granite Falls to take on the Yellow Medicine East Sting next Friday while the Dawson-Boyd Blackjacks (4-1) will host RTR next Friday as well.
