Canby defense comes up big in road victory

Football roundup

CLARA CITY – Canby’s defense was impenetrable in their road football matchup against MACCRAY Friday night. The Lancers didn’t allow the Wolverines to score a point in their 14-0 win.

Even Engesmoe was nothing short of electric in the defensive secondary. He finished the game with three interceptions, or half of the six total turnover forced by the Lancer defense.

Sam Drietz was making plays on both sides of the ball for Canby. He recovered a fumble on defense and he scored on a two-point conversion in the first half following the first of Nick Wagner’s two touchdowns.

The duo of Evan Weber and Wagner in the backfield paved the way for the Lancers’ offense. Weber did not find his way into the end zone, but was able to efficiently move the ball down the field and put his team in a position to score. He finished the game with 78 rushing yards on 19 attempts.

Wagner added another 47 yards on the ground, but his real value came in the air. He was on the receiving end of 76 of the team’s 97 passing yards. He scored his first touchdown in the second quarter on a 22-yard reception and iced the game in the fourth quarter with a 14-yard touchdown catch.

On the other end of the passes, Lane Fink threw the ball 32 times. He threw a pair of picks, but also found the end zone twice.

The Canby Lancers (3-2) will look to build on the road win at home when they host Lac qui Parle Valley Friday at 7 p.m.

SLAYTON – The Murray County Rebels steamrolled steamrolled their way through Sleepy Eye’s football team Friday night, cruising to a 27-0 win. After getting shut out in the first quarter, the Rebels found the end zone three times in the second to give themselves a solid cushion that they would not relinquish.

Ross Engelkes seemed unstoppable on the ground in the game. He ran for 147 yards and a touchdown at the end of the first half, averaging nearly six yards per carry. He also played a roll in the passing game, catching three passes for 43 yards.

The connection between quarterback Abe Paulzine and receiver Christian Tentinger was in full effect. Tentinger was on the receiving end of 83 of Paulzine’s 179 passing yards, including a short touchdown in the fourth quarter. Paulzine also picked up 63 yards and a touchdown with his legs.

The two offensive playmakers, Tentinger and Engelkes, made just as much of an impact defensively. They tied for team-highs in tackles, with four solo tackles on the night. Also making plays in the secondary were Andrew Holm and Tanner Graphenteen, who each came away with an interception.

The Murray County Central Rebels (4-1) will go on the road for their next game against Martin County West Friday at 7 p.m.
