Dawson-Boyd comeback in New Ulm falls short

By Jake McNeill 2 min read

NEW ULM - Dawson-Boyd football's second half comeback effort fell short in their 34-28 road loss to Minnesota Valley Lutheran Thursday night.

The Blackjacks trailed by as many as 20 points, but clawed themselves back into a one-possession game, largely due to the passing game.

"We probably threw the ball better than I thought, I thought we would have run the ball better," said head coach Cory Larson.

Dawson-Boyd quarterback Keegon Wicht had no fear of airing the ball out. He threw for 241 yards and four touchdowns, including a 70-yard bomb to Brayson Boike off a double-move route towards the end of the third quarter to bring the Blackjacks within four.

While the run game was never able to get traction, the real killer for DB was turnovers. They coughed the ball up three times, and twice the Chargers took over within the DB 10-yard line after the turnover.

While DB had missed opportunities, Larson spoke positively of how well MVL played.

"We beat them week 1 last year, I didn't think they were too physical, but they were really physical this year," Larson said. "They're really good up front on both sides, and their line turned some three-yard runs into big gains."

Going forward, the Blackjacks will be looking to get better in terms of conditioning. Larson said that depth is something they lack, so on a day as hot as today, rotating guys out becomes difficult. As the season progresses, they expect to get in game shape quickly.

Dawson-Boyd (0-1) will face Canby at home Friday at 7 p.m.
