ST. MICHAEL — Despite being the first event of the day, the Murray County Central girls 4×800 meter relay team consisting of Ashley Overgaauw, Amanda Overgaauw, Brylei Schreier and Sophia Nelson wanted to finish their season on a strong note in the final day of the Class A state track and field meet at St. Michael-Albertville High School. The Rebels did just that, improving on last year’s fifth-place finish with a second-place time of 9:36:93.

The relay team weren’t the only Rebels competing in Friday’s finals. Amanda Overgaauw (3200 meters) would also place second with a time of 10:51:56 while Ashley Overgaauw placed ninth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:23:94. Finishing up on the Rebels, Schreier would place fifth in the 400 meters with a time of 59.89 seconds.

The Lakeview Lakers also had a solid day in their events. Greg Schafer placed third in the 100 meter dash with a time of 11.12 seconds and Ethan Schwankl competed in two events on the day. The first of Schwankl’s events was the 1600 meter dash, where he would place 13th and he also ran in the 800 meter dash, where he would place eighth out of nine participants. Fellow Lakeview student Nathan Fenske competed in the boys high jump and was 20th overall.

State shot put champion Tony Nelson of Tracy-Milroy-Balaton also competed in Friday’s discus event and he would medal again, placing fourth with a throw of 155-11. Fellow TMB student Sarena Schwartz competed in the girls pole vault and placed third with a height of 10-06.

The last event on the girls side was the 4×400 meter relay in which Canby/Minneota participated in and took fourth place with a time of 4:05:45. The relay team consisted of RyAnn Hansen, Claire Stoks, Grace Drietz and Braelyn Merritt. To close out for Canby/Minneota, Trevor Gray placed seventh in the high jump with a height of 6-02.00.

Lac qui Parle Valley/Dawson-Boyd had Brayson Boike compete in two events. Boike placed seventh in the long jump with a distance of 20-09.50 and 14th in the high jump with a height of 6-00.
