SMSU TENNIS: SMSU has season end with 4-2 semifinal loss to Winona State

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — The No. 3 seed Southwest Minnesota State University women’s tennis team had its season end on Saturday suffering a 4-2 defeat to No. 2 seed Winona State University in the semifinals of the NSIC Tournament at Huether Match Pointe.

SMSU, which set a program single season win record at the Division II level, ends its season at 17-11 overall. It’s the second straight season SMSU has advanced to the semifinals of the tournament.

WSU won the doubles point earning a 6-4 win at No. 1 and a 6-0 victory at No. 2. SMSU’s No. 3 doubles team of Roz Oye and Cora Delich led their match 5-4, but the match was not finished following WSU’s two wins.

It was a battle in singles play as SMSU’s two seniors, Kristina Vuksanovic and Cora Delich each won matches. Vuksanovic earned a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 3, while Delich carded a 6-2, 6-1 victory at No. 5. Joana Reis Indio lost 6-4, 6-0 at No. 1, while Courtenay Leonard battled at No. 2 before losing 7-5, 6-4. In another close match, Maja Louisa Harck dropped a hard-fought three-set match at No. 4, while Faith Madikwe split the first two sets at No. 6, but the match wasn’t completed due as WSU secured the decisive fourth team point.
