MARSHALL — After inclement weather and cooling temperatures have delayed their start, the Marshall boys golf team and several area teams got their seasons underway on Monday in the Marshall Invite at Marshall Golf Club. Marshall Varsity took first with a team score of 321, followed by Lakeview in second with a score of 352, Dawson-Boyd in fourth (367), Minneota in fifth (368), Yellow Medicine East in seventh (376), Russell-Tyler-Ruthton in 10th (403), Marshall JV in 11th (405), Canby in 13th (412) and Murray County Central in 14th (474). Tracy-Milroy-Balaton recorded an incomplete team score.

Marshall

For Marshall, on varsity, Luke Ehlers led with a score of 74 to earn medalist honors. Jayden Manthei added an 80 to tie for fourth while Evan Franson shot an 82 to take sixth place. Zach Kramer fired an 85 to place 10th while Sam Schwarz and Joey Fossum each had a 90 to tie for 14th to round out their scores.

Marshall coach Kari Ehlers said she was pleased with their effort throughout the meet, especially with not being able to get on the course for much practice time so far this season.

“The 321 is definitely a spark to start our spring season. We have not been able to get on the course for good practice time so I was happy with the scores that the boys posted,” coach Ehlers said. “Luke, a freshman, was the medalist for the day with a 74. He had a very smooth round with two birdies, 10 pars, and six bogeys. His round was very consistent and I am excited to see where Luke can score this season. Our next guy, Jayden, showed good improvement over last year with hitting the fairway off of the tee box. His score is a great start to our season and I expect Jayden to be under 80 on a regular basis. Evan, a senior, carded an 82 which included two birdies on the back nine. A highlight of the varsity team was Zach, a junior. He was not part of the top team last year and put together a very solid 85 to round out our top 4 scores. Sam and Joey, both juniors, were able to round out the varsity team scores with 90s.”
