SMSU WHEELCHAIR BASKETBALL: SMSU’s Walter Johnson named All-American

ARLINGTON, Texas – Southwest Minnesota State University wheelchair basketball senior Walter Johnson was named this past weekend to the National Wheelchair Basketball Association Intercollegiate Division All-American first team.

Johnson, a native of Deerfield Beach, Fla., was one of five players named to the first team. It’s the second All-American award for Johnson during his career at SMSU after he was named second team All-American in 2017.

This season, Johnson helped SMSU to a 13-12 overall record and a sixth-place finish at the recently held National Intercollegiate Wheelchair Basketball Tournament in Arlington, Texas. In the tournament opener versus Edinboro last Friday, he scored 27 points on 12 of 17 shooting, while scoring 22 points on 10 of 19 shooting in a loss in the quarterfinals to UW-Whitewater on Friday night.

In Saturday’s consolation bracket play, he made 13 of 20 from the field for 28 points in a win over the University of Missouri, before closing his career with 28 points on 13 of 24 shooting in a loss to the University of Arizona in the fifth-place game.

Johnson finished the season averaging a team-high 25.6 points per game, while shooting 58 percent (266 of 456) from the field, including 40 percent (40 of 99) from 3-point range. He also made 67 of 87 (77.0) free throws.

Johnson closed his career scoring more than 3,000 points.
