MARSHALL — The 2022 Marshall Amateur Hockey Association Squirt Squadron tournament was held at the Red Baron Arena and Expo this past weekend. The tournament was host to 16 total teams from across the state, with the Marshall Squirt A team earning first place.

The weekend started with a 7-0 win over the Waseca Bluejays on Friday. Callahan Jans and Liam Deutz both earned a hat trick for the game. Dax Anderson added one goal as well in Marshall’s victory.

On Saturday morning the team put together another strong performance in an 8-0 victory over the Des Moines Jr Buccaneers. Ty Stelter was able to get the scoring started for Marshall. Callahan Jans had another strong performance for the team leading the way with three goals. Liam Deutz added a pair while Nolan Deutz and Grady Hess each netted one for Marshall.

On Saturday afternoon Marshall faced off against Shakopee. Liam Deutz was able to score one off the goalie’s back and into the net just 25 seconds into the contest to get Marshall started. Callahan Jans again had a great performance and put the puck in the net four times against the Sabers. Grady Hess also added a tally in the 6-1 victory.

The championship game was played Sunday afternoon against a strong team from Albert Lea. This time it was Grady Hess’ time to shine as he was able to earn himself a hat trick with a goal in the first period and two in the second. Dax Anderson also added one for Marshall in the second to put Marshall on top 4-1 at the end of two periods. Albert Lea pushed back in the third. With the momentum swinging their way, Albert Lea narrowed it to a two-goal lead for Marshall before Brekken Parrie was able to steal the puck from an Albert Lea defender at half ice and take it down and beat the Albert Lea goalie one- on-one to seal the win for Marshall.

Brayson Ritter was in net all weekend long for Marshall and had an outstanding tournament performance. Ritter had two shutouts while allowing only three goals on the weekend. He finished the weekend with a .938 save percentage.

The team will be back in action this Sunday at the Red Baron Arena for games against New Ulm Sleepy Eye and Mankato.
