MARSHALL — After getting back-to-back wins last week, the Marshall girls hockey team looked to keep things going against Waseca on Friday. Using a trio of goals in the second to its advantage, Marshall gained a solid lead and never looked back, earning a 7-1 victory at the Red Baron Arena and Expo.

Marshall coach Cassi Weiss said she was pleased with their ability to create higher quality shots on net as the game went on.

“We did a really good job of getting pucks to the net, their goalie did a good job in that first period and then in the second period we were just able to capitalize on our chances, get a few more rebounds and get a little bit better quality aimed shots and kind of take control from there, so that was really nice,” Weiss said.

After some back and forth play, Marshall was able to strike first, as Lily Verkinderen found the back of the net on the assist by Kalyn DeVlieger to give MHS a 1-0 lead with 6:28 left in the opening period. Marshall took the one-goal advantage going into the second frame, but wasn’t done there, with Mady Girard scoring on the assist from Tessa Gannott and Leah Schaefer with 11:02 left in the frame before Kayta Waltz got one past the goaltender just 12 seconds later to make it 3-0. MHS then added a goal from Olivia Penske on the assist by DeVlieger with 5:52 left in the second to push its advantage to 4-0 after two.

Marshall continued its momentum in the third, as Gannott scored just 17 seconds into the frame on the assist by DeVlieger and Shelby Ormberg to make it 5-0 before DeVlieger got one past the goaltender a couple of minutes later on the assist by Verkinderen to push the lead to 6-0 with 14:48 left. MHS then got a goal from Kendal Beernaert with 2:12 left before a goal by Waseca with 1:46 left brought it to the 7-1 final.

Weiss said offensively, especially in the second period, they generated a lot of shots from the point which allowed them to find scoring chances off rebounds as well as crashing the net.

“We were using our defense a lot in the second and getting shots from the point, which resulted in some big rebounds,” Weiss said. “With our rushes, we were able to pick corners on our shots and then our ability to crash the net was strong.”

Marshall outshot Waseca 32-21 on the game. Belle Deutz and Paige Christianson combined to record 20 saves in net for Marshall.

Up next

Marshall (12-8-1) will continue its homestand today, facing Willmar at 11 a.m. Weiss said as they get closer to the end of the regular season, they need to maintain their consistency and play their game no matter who they face.

“We just need to make sure we’re staying consistent as we get to the end of the regular season and make sure that every game, every shift, we stay consistent playing the top level game that we have to offer against any and every team,” Weiss said.
