MARSHALL -- With a quick signature, the next step to Gabe Sherman's athletic career was complete. The Marshall senior signed his National Letter of Intent on Thursday to compete in track and field at the University of Jamestown.

Sherman said it felt good to finally have this day come and officially be committed.

"It feels really good, it's very relieving," Sherman said. "The search was definitely difficult and there were a lot of things to think about when picking a big school but I'm glad I've got it figured out. Jamestown's a great school and I'm really excited to be there."

Sherman added he knew there was potential for him to compete in track and field at the next level during his junior year and what ultimately drew him to Jamestown was the overall atmosphere of the campus and the program.

"The decision to compete in track began at my junior year here, I decided this is something that's definitely a potential for me and I enjoy competing in it," Sherman said. "The decision for Jamestown came over the summer I was up there hanging out with my sister, she goes to school there, and I just really enjoy the campus and the people and it's a great atmosphere up there."

The past few years, Sherman has been a key contributor to Marshall's success on the ice and track. He attributed that success to the impact his coaches and teammates have had on him. He said his coaches have had a tremendous impact and have pushed him every day.

"My coaches have had an amazing impact. Sam Nielsen came in last year as a first-year [throws] coach and she really stepped up to the plate and took it full swing and has done a great job," Sherman said. "I also had a coach before that, Chad Bergjord, he really helped me fall in love with the sport and that was awesome and I really appreciate him so much."

Sherman added his teammates are extremely supportive and they've created a tight bond with each other over the years.

"My teammates are amazing and so supportive in everything that I do," Sherman said. "We have a really good atmosphere of the team out here on the track team and us throwers have bonded really well; it's a brotherhood and sisterhood, so it's super tight-knit and close."

Sherman said he plans to major in mechanical engineering. Before he heads to Jamestown, Sherman still has one final spring with the track team. He said he's looking forward to getting back into the pits and spending time with his teammates.

"I'm looking forward to just getting back out in the pits and getting some throws in and spending time with my friends and enjoying my senior year," Sherman said. "I love to throw so just getting back out there is the goal to enjoy my last season."
