PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Marshall boys basketball gets past St. Peter, 63-58
PIPESTONE — The Marshall boys basketball team defeated St. Peter 63-58 in the Big South Showcase on Saturday in Pipestone.
Noah Wilts led Marshall with 17 points while Andrew Elton added 14 and Omar Abdi had eight. Abdi led in rebounds with seven while Bryant Paulsen recorded six and Tyler Maeyaert led in assists with four.
Marshall (2-0) will face Redwood Valley at home on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m.

MINNEOTA — The Minneota boys basketball team defeated Yellow Medicine East 64-61 on Saturday.
Cale Sorensen led Minneota with 12 points while Sawyer DeSmet added 11 and Anthony Rybinski and Max Rost each had 10. Sorensen also led in rebounds with 14 while Rost led in steals with three.
Owen Torvik led YME with 28 points while Bryce Sneller added 15 and Nikson Knapper had 11. Sneller led in rebounds with six while Landon Anderson led in assists with four.
Minneota (1-0) will face Lakeview on the road on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m. while YME (0-3) will face RRC on the road on Tuesday at 7:15 p.m.

WASECA — The Marshall girls hockey team defeated Waseca 4-0 on Saturday.
Marshall got out to a quick lead when Leah Schaefer scored on the assist by Mady Girard to make it 1-0 after the opening period. In the second period, Marshall pushed its lead to 4-0, as Aubree Metheny (assisted by Kendal Beernaert and Kayta Waltz), Tessa Gannott (assisted by Eliza Holmgren and Metheny) and Lily Verkinderen (assisted by Regan Loft) all found the back of the net.
Belle Deutz earned the victory in net for Marshall, recording 17 saves.
Marshall (4-4-1) will face Mankato West at home on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Marshall 10, Waseca 1
WASECA — The Marshall boys hockey team defeated Waseca 10-1 on Saturday.
Marshall jumped out to a strong start, as Braxton Meyer found the back of the net on the assist by Jared Reinsma 10:39 into the first period before Meyer got another goal 10 seconds later to make it 2-0. Meyer and MHS weren’t done there, as he got one past the goaltender on the power play on the assist by Talan Plante a couple of minutes later to complete the hat trick and give Marshall a 3-0 lead.
Marshall carried that advantage into the second period before adding four more goals in the frame. Zach Kramer got things started with a goal on the assist by Joey Fossum with 12:15 left in the period before Logan Deutz (assisted by Parker Schmitt) and Fossum (assisted by Plante) made it 6-0 with 2:06 left in the frame. Waseca would get a goal with less than a minute left in the second, but MHS answered with one of its own, as Reinsma found the back of the net on the power play on the assist by Corbin Beernaert in the closing seconds of the frame to push Marshall’s lead to 7-1 after two.
Marshall continued to attack in the third, with Meyer getting his fourth goal of the game on the assist by Reinsma and Plante with 11:21 left before Chase Mellenthin (assisted by Kramer) and Plante (assisted by Reinsma) each added a goal to bring it to the 10-1 final.
Marshall outshot Waseca 46-13 on the game. Gavin Welsh earned the victory in net for Marshall, recording 12 saves.
