MARSHALL -- Christmas came a few days early for thousands of high school football players and college coaches across the country, as Wednesday marked the first day of the early National Signing period for the college football world, which will last through Friday.

Marshall senior defensive tackle/guard Deylin Hasert was among that massive group, as he signed his National Letter of Intent to attend Iowa State University.

Hasert said he was excited to finally have this day come and officially be committed.

"I'm really excited because it's something that I've always wanted to do for the longest time of my life since I was a little kid, so it's kind of all of those little emotions rushing back," Hasert said. "I'm super excited and super blessed that I'm in this position and to be here with all of my family and get to have this day because there are a lot of kids that dream of this opportunity and I'm just glad that I'm able to have it."

Hasert added he's always wanted to play football at the next level and what drew him to Iowa State was their program and the strong bond he was able to create with the coaches.

"Playing football has just always been something that I've wanted to do since probably I was in fifth grade. Coach [Terry] Bahlmann always talks about how I was in my backyard and I was taking videos and sending them to schools when I was in fifth grade, but I've always dreamed about playing football at the next level, so it's been a no-brainer," Hasert said. "When I was a freshman, I was always researching different schools I could play at and then when I was a sophomore I got my first offer and that was from Iowa State and I think that just really played a big role because I've been building relationships with them for almost two years and the coaching staff there is one of the best in the country; I think coach [Matt] Campbell has one of the best programs and they are on the brink of winning a Big 12 championship here soon so I think it's going to be a great program to be a part of."

The past few years, Hasert has been a key contributor to Marshall's success on the gridiron. This past fall, Hasert recorded 14 1/2 total tackles, including 10 solo tackles, 3 1/2 tackles for loss, two quarterback sacks and forced a fumble. Hasert attributed that success to the impact his coaches and teammates have had on him. He said his coaches have played a key role and he learned a lot about improving in all aspects of the game.

"They've had a tremendous impact. I know when I was a freshman, I probably never really had seen the weight room that much, so I started getting in there to help me a lot physically and then learn the game of football more," Hasert said. "Once I started learning the game from coach Bahlmann, [Mitchell] Maxwell, all of those guys, I started finally progressing more than a lot of other kids; there were definitely hard times here at Marshall, but we always got through it and there are a lot of really good memories that I made with my teammates both in the past and now."

Hasert added his teammates have had a tremendous impact on him, especially his former teammates who have gone on to play at the next level.

"I've had a lot of good teammates and played with a lot of good players like Bryce [Lance], Yahya [Black] or Trey Steinbach, so I've always had those guys and they've done what I've always wanted to do, so I've had guys to look up to who have achieved what I've wanted to achieve. It's always been good coming from a really good program like Marshall, there's a lot of kids that don't get to see that every single day; I remember walking to the high school and seeing college coaches in here and that made me work harder in the weight room and in practice trying to achieve what I wanted to achieve like all of those guys."

Going into next fall, Hasert said he's looking forward to getting to grow more and learn more about playing offensive line.

"Just learning as much as I can and getting developed and learning the craft of playing offensive line and going more in depth with playing offensive line instead of just playing both ways," Hasert said. "I'm really excited."
