MARSHALL -- The weather might be starting to get a little colder, but that didn't stop Charlie Jacobson from thinking about the next few springs.
The Marshall senior signed his National Letter of Intent on Wednesday to play baseball at South Dakota State University and has been waiting a long time for this day to finally come.
"It just feels awesome," Jacobson said. "I committed last March and it felt like it took forever to get to this day but it feels good to officially be a Jackrabbit."
Jacobson said what drew him to SDSU and the baseball program was the campus and the relationships he was able to build with the coaching staff.
"I got on campus last March and I just loved it there," Jacobson said. "I really built a great relationship with SDSU's pitching coach Kirk Clark and building a relationship with all of the coaches got to be special and I just started to really love the place."
The past few years, Jacobson has been a key contributor to Marshall's success on both the diamond and the hardwood. On the mound, Jacobson threw 35 1/3 innings this past spring, winning three games and allowed just 21 hits and runs each and was second on the team in strikeouts at 45. He also had an earned run average (ERA) of 3.17 and a walks plus hits per innings pitched (WHIP) of 1.50. At the plate, Jacobson collected 18 hits, including nine doubles, as well as 15 RBI with an average of .316. Jacobson attributed that success to the impact his coaches and teammates have had on him. He said both his baseball and basketball coaches have had a tremendous impact on him throughout his time at MHS and he's grateful for everything they've done for him.
"My coaches definitely had a huge impact on getting me to where I am today," Jacobson said. "I wouldn't be there without them today, especially coach [Chace] Pollock and coach [Mitch] Maxwell as well as my basketball coaches, coach [Travis] Carroll and coach [Mike] Christianson."
Jacobson added his teammates have always been there for him and supported him.
"My teammates have helped a lot," Jacobson said. "They've been so supportive in getting me to this goal today and they've always been there for me whenever I need something."
Jacobson said he plans to major in sports management, with the hope of getting a master's degree in sports administration. Before he heads to Brookings, though, Jacobson still has one final spring with the Marshall baseball team. He said he's looking forward to spending time with his teammates and making another run at state.
"I'm looking forward to making some more memories and hopefully another state tournament run," Jacobson said.
