MARSHALL — Both the Southwest Minnesota State University and MSU Moorhead soccer teams were in search of an important victory when they met on Friday, with SMSU winless at home (0-5) and MSU Moorhead without a win on the season (0-11).

Thanks to a pair of second-half goals by Abbey Hoisington, the Mustangs were able to snap that streak with a 2-0 victory on Friday at Mattke Field.

SMSU coach Erin Kasmarik-Mallett said they knew it was going to be a tight battle and was pleased with how they were able to take another step forward to come away with a win.

“We knew it would be a battle and that’s what every conference game is like, it doesn’t really matter what your record is, good, bad or in between, all of them are that way,” Kasmarik-Mallett said. “For our team, taking that step and being really mentally disciplined and create our chances and capitalize on them, that’s how you win games in this league.”

Both teams had chances to get on the board early, but weren’t able to capitalize. The back and forth play continued the remainder of the first half, with the score deadlocked at 0-0 going into halftime.

The second half saw more tight play in the early stages, but both sides couldn’t find the back of the net. Then with 18:38 left, Hoisington got a pass from Emily Maciel and fired a shot past the MSU Moorhead goalkeeper that hit the crossbar and bounced into the back of the net to give SMSU a 1-0 lead. Hoisington and the Mustangs weren’t done there, as she added a goal with 30 seconds left on the assist by Taylor Tabacco to bring it to the 2-0 final.

Hoisington said their key on offense, especially in the second half, was their ability to move without the ball and connect passes to their feet.

“We had more movement off of the ball and passing to our feet was the main focus during our halftime talks,” Hoisington said. “We kept on moving and playing to our feet and that really helped us.”

SMSU outshot MSU Moorhead 13-1 on the game, including a 7-1 advantage in shots on goal. Kirsten Wetterstrom led SMSU with four shots while Erin Wetterstrom, Selena Prolic and Hoisington each added two. Prolic, Kirsten Wetterstrom and Hoisington led in shots on goal with two each.

Meghan Harkin recorded the lone save in net for SMSU.
