MARSHALL — Last week, the Marshall football team had a bounce-back outing, earning a 41-0 victory against Belle Plaine to finish the regular season at 4-4.

Chidi Nwakama led Marshall with 166 yards rushing on 11 carries and three touchdowns while Tate Condezo added 52 yards on the ground on six carries and a score. Tyler Maeyaert completed one of his four pass attempts for 20 yards while Jake Eben completed one of his two pass attempts for 12 yards and added nine yards rushing and a touchdown and Cayden Werner led in receiving with a 20-yard catch while Nwakama added a 12-yard reception.

Defensively, Bryant Paulsen led Marshall with 6.5 total tackles while Fenger added four total tackles and Andrew Wallen had 3.5 total tackles and a fumble recovery for a touchdown.

Marshall coach Terry Bahlmann said he felt they did a great job on both sides of the field and made explosive plays to come away with a key win.

“Last week I thought we did a great job, we came out and ran the football, controlled the line of scrimmage and made plays on both sides of the football,” Bahlmann said. “We showed some explosiveness again which we hadn’t done in a while, Chidi had a huge game for us and it was overall a great team performance.”

This week, Marshall will hit the road as the No. 6 seed in Section 2AAAA and will face No. 3 seed Faribault today at 7 p.m. Faribault is fresh off a 36-7 victory against Northfield and is 5-3 on the season. They will be led by Hunter Nelson, Matthias Lenway, Jordan Klecker, AJ Worrell and Elijah Hammonds.

Bahlmann said the Falcons will have a lot of size on the line to help create space for their running backs and dual-threat quarterback. He added their section is the only one in the state that has every team at .500 or above this season, so they know it’s going to be a challenge.

“They’re big up front, they’ve got three guys over 300 pounds and a senior quarterback that’s left-handed and throws it well and two quick running backs. They play a tough schedule over there, they played Mankato East close, played Kasson-Mantorville to within a field goal and they’ve had a good season,” Bahlmann said. “We are unique in our section because every team has at least a .500 record and it’s the only section in the state where that happened, so we know we’re in a tough section and are on the road and looking forward to playing some football.”

Offensively, Bahlmann said they will look to build from their success last week and need to step up and make the plays when they are presented to them.

“We did a good job last week, we just need to execute. Last week we kept our penalties to a minimum and moved the football,” Bahlmann said. “If we stay ahead of the chains, we’ll be in good shape and when there’s a chance to make a big play we need to make it and just stay aggressive and be smart with the ball.”

Defensively, Bahlmann said they will have to be able to control the line of scrimmage and put Faribault in bad yardage situations to gain momentum.

“They like to run a lot of bubble screens so we need to tackle that, our defensive back has to tackle that,” Bahlmann said. “They’re big up front with a good tailback and a good running quarterback so we need to at least maintain the line of scrimmage and put them in bad yardage situations.”

As they begin their postseason journey today, Bahlmann said he’s looking forward to competing another week and they need to be ready to go right from the start.

“Just competing,” Bahlmann said. “Sometimes in playoff play, some teams aren’t excited and we want to make sure we’re ready to play.”
