MARSHALL — Last week, the Marshall football team bounced back, picking up its first win of the season with a 45-8 victory against New Ulm.

Chidi Nwakama led Marshall with 58 rushing yards on eight carries and two touchdowns while Malachi Klemm added 39 yards on the ground on four carries and a score, Tate Condezo had 33 yards rushing, Jonathon Dirckx had 31 yards and Keaton Maertens had 12 yards and a score. Tyler Maeyaert completed three of his seven pass attempts for 80 yards and a touchdown while Maertens led in receiving with 76 yards on two catches and Cayden Werner had a four-yard reception for a score. Defensively, Andrew Wallen led Marshall with 7.5 total tackles while Maertens and Bryant Paulsen each added five total tackles, with Maertens also recording an interception.

Marshall coach Terry Bahlmann said last week’s win was a key confidence boost for their team and they will look to keep up the momentum they saw against New Ulm.

“It was a big win for us last week,” Bahlmann said. “We were 0-2 and of course the kids were feeling a little bit of pressure from it and we came out and moved the ball early and often and I think that relieved the pressure of that first drive that we had. Then we started playing like we can a little bit so it was good to get the weight off of our shoulders. We’ve been working on improving Marshall football and getting to where we need to be.”

This week, MHS will hit the road again, facing Worthington today at 7 p.m. Worthington is fresh off a 46-6 loss to St. Peter last week and is searching for its first win of the season. They will be led by Jake Brandner, Andrew Dorcey, Abagotte and Marenono Opiew, Riley Widboom and Luke Gordon.

Bahlmann said Worthington will play either a 5-2 or a 4-3 defensive approach and throw the ball a lot on offense, and added they will need to put pressure on the quarterback.

“They play a 5-2 defense or a 4-3, they’ve shown a lot of shotgun stuff and try to throw the ball. They throw a lot of post-type situations and will try to spread us out and make big plays over the top,” Bahlmann said. “Obviously we want to put some pressure on the quarterback and get some interceptions. Turnovers are huge; last week we got some there and turned the field around for us and were able to score quickly.”

Offensively, Bahlmann said they want to be able to expand their offense and execute when they need to.

“We want to be able to expand our offense. Last week we went back to the basic stuff to make sure we were in positive situations and there’s a lot more we can do,” Bahlmann said. “We need to expand that and when we run something a little bit different, we need to execute it.”

Defensively, Bahlmann added they need to continue to improve and put themselves in good field position.

“We just need to keep improving,” Bahlmann said. “I thought we’ve played pretty well in all three games defensively and they keep improving and putting us in good situations.”
