AMATEUR BASEBALL: Milroy Yankees win Region 4C tournament; Hadley gets tripped up by Windom in series finale
MARSHALL — The Milroy Yankees defeated Bird Island 7-3 to claim the Region 4C championship on Sunday at Legion Field.
The Yankees jumped out to an early lead in the first when Dylan Criquet-Danielson connected on a single, Andy Schmidt reached on a fielder’s choice and Matt Bauer smacked an RBI double to put Milroy up 1-0. They then added a run in the third on an RBI groundout by Derek Rasmussen, but Bird Island had an answer, scoring two runs in the next half-inning on an RBI single and a wild pitch to tie things up at 2-2.
Milroy responded quickly, though, getting a solo home run by Branden Flock in the bottom of the fourth before Bauer, Rasmussen and Jake Tauer lined RBI singles to push the Yankees’ lead to 6-2 after five.
After a scoreless sixth, Bird Island got back on the board in the top of the seventh with an RBI groundout, but the Yankees answered with a run of their own in the bottom half of the frame, with Andy Schmidt connecting on a double before coming around to score on an RBI single by Rasmussen to bring it to the 7-3 final.
Bauer led the Yankees with three hits and three RBI while Rasmussen added two hits and two RBI, Tauer had two hits and an RBI and Andy Schmidt had two hits.
Aaron Mathiowetz earned the victory on the mound, going 6 1/3 innings while allowing two runs on six hits and struck out two.
The Yankees (19-8) will have a first-round bye in the Class C state tournament.

Windom 1,
Hadley 0
WINDOM — The Hadley amateur baseball team fell to Windom 1-0 in Game 3 of its Best of 3 series on Sunday afternoon.
The two teams were deadlocked in a pitcher’s duel right away, with Hadley’s Luke Drooger and Windom’s Luke Gilbertson getting into their respective zones. Windom had chances early on to score, getting baserunners aboard in the third and fifth innings, but Drooger was able to get out of the jam with strikeouts to end each frame. Hadley would get a baserunner on in the top of the sixth and eighth innings, but weren’t able to capitalize.
In the bottom of the eighth, Windom got a pair of base hits to start the at-bat before an error with two outs allowed a run to come across for the Pirates. Hadley would get the tying run on second with one out in the top of the ninth, but Windom sealed the victory and its trip to state with a double play.

With the loss, Hadley’s season comes to an end. It also snaps a streak of six straight state tournament appearances by the Buttermakers.
