JUNIOR LEGION BASEBALL: Marshall Junior Legion Black finishes 3-1 at home tournament

MARSHALL — The Marshall Junior Legion Black baseball team went 3-1 over the weekend at its home tournament with wins over Andover, Alexandria and Bellevue East (NE). The team’s lone loss came at the hands of the Central Raiders on Sunday in the championship game.

Marshall 8, Alexandria 0

After opening the tournament with an 8-0 win over Bellevue East (NE) on Friday, the Marshall ballclub kept its foot on the gas in game two of the tournament with another convincing win, this time over Alexandria.

Ashton Rowe earned the victory on the mound for Marshall after pitching all five innings and giving up only three hits. Rowe struck out one batter in the victory while giving up a pair of walks. The win moves Rowe to 2-1 on the season.

Hits came in bunches for the Junior Legion Black squad as the group combined for 10 hits in the win. Zach Liebfried and Tyler Maeyert led the way with two hits apiece and a pair of RBIs. Talan Plante, Andrew Wallen and Ashton Rowe all finished with an RBI.

Marshall 3, Andover 2

With a walk-off base hit in the bottom of the eighth inning, Rowe lifted Marshall to a narrow victory over Andover in extra innings.

Parker Schmitt pitched all eight innings for Marshall and earned the well-deserved victory after racking up five strikeouts and surrendering only three hits. Schmitt also allowed seven walks.

Plante put together a solid performance at the plate for Marshall with a game-high three hits and added an RBI groundout in the bottom of the third inning. Rowe added a pair of hits for Marshall and led the team with two RBIs, including the game-winner in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Marshall’s final game of the tournament was a tightly-contested matchup until the sixth inning when the Raiders plated nine runs to earn the win.

Plante took the loss on the mound after pitching five innings while giving up four earned runs with eight walks and five hits surrendered. Gavin Peterson took over in the sixth inning to collect the final out. Peterson gave up one earned run on two hits and a pair of walks. Peterson added a strikeout as well.

Ezra Maurice was a perfect 3-3 at the plate with three singles to lead Marshall. Plante finished with two hits, while Lincoln Graven and Rowe each added one.

Marshall Junior Legion Black (13-3) will be back in action on Monday when the team hosts Minneota at 6 p.m.
