SMSU TENNIS: SMSU’s Flight and Harck earn All-NSIC tennis accolades

BURNSVILLE — Southwest Minnesota State University senior Maegan Flight has been named to the 2021 women’s tennis All-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference first team, while freshman teammate Maja Louisa Harck was named All-NSIC honorable mention, the league office announced on Tuesday. The all-conference teams and awards were selected by the conference head coaches.

Flight and Harck are the first SMSU players to earn All-NSIC honors since the 2011 season.

Both players helped SMSU to one of its most successful seasons in nearly 15 years, closing with a 9-8 overall record, including 8-3 in NSIC play. The third-place regular season finish was the program’s highest since 2008, while the semifinal appearance in the NSIC Tournament was its first since the 2009 season. SMSU’s winning record was just its third since the 1998 season.

Flight, a native of Charleston, Ill., and a transfer from the University of Illinois-Springfield, played No. 1 singles for the Mustangs and finished the season with a record of 11-5. She finished 9-1 in NSIC matches with her lone loss coming in three sets against Augustana’s Valeriya Monko, who was named the 2021 NSIC Player of the Year. Flight won all 11 of her matches in straight sets.

Flight also played doubles for SMSU and finished the season 7-9 overall, including 6-5 in NSIC play. She was 5-7 at No. 1 doubles and had a 2-2 record at No. 3 doubles.

Harck, a native of Harrislee, Germany, finished NSIC play with a 9-1 record in singles play, including winning seven in straight sets. She had five wins at No. 5, two at No. 3 and two at No. 4.

Harck recorded a mark of 7-9 in doubles play, including 6-4 in conference matches. She was 5-0 at No. 2 doubles, 1-3 at No. 1 doubles and 1-6 at No. 3 doubles.
