SMSU SOFTBALL: SMSU closes regular season at MSU and CSP

MARSHALL — The Southwest Minnesota State University softball team (25-15, 16-10 NSIC) will finish the regular season on the road with doubleheaders against No. 17 ranked Minnesota State University (30-7, 19-5 NSIC) today and Concordia-St. Paul (21-17, 15-9 NSIC) on Sunday. Today’s doubleheader will start at 1 p.m. in Mankato and Sunday’s will start at noon in St. Paul.

•The Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Tournament will be held next Thursday, Friday and Saturday in Rochester at the RYSFA Complex.

•Minnesota State is 30-7, 19-5 NSIC, heading into Saturday’s doubleheader.

•MSU swept last MSU Moorhead last Saturday taking game one 2-1 and winning game two in five innings, 9-1. Sunday’s games were canceled against Northern State.

•MSU is currently on a 10-game winning streak.

•MSU is led by Torey Richards, who is batting .412 with a team-high 49 hits. She also has 24 runs along with five doubles, along with recording 11 RBIs.

•Hannah McCarville is hitting .407 leading her team with 35 RBIs and 10 doubles. She also has recorded 48 hits.

•MSU is batting .326 and averaging 5.6 runs per game, while the pitching staff has a 1.54 ERA with 319 strikeouts in 250 innings pitched.

Minnesota State

•SMSU and MSU have meet 91 times since the 1975 season with the Mavericks leading 67-24 in the series.

•SMSU and MSU last met back in 2019 where the Mustangs were swept 5-2 and 1-0.

•SMSU’s last victory against MSU came on May 3, 2018, where the Mustangs won 4-3 in the NSIC tournament snapping an 11-game losing streak dating back to 2013.

About Concordia-St. Paul

•Concordia-St. Paul is 21-17, 15-9 NSIC, heading into Saturday’s doubleheader against Sioux Falls.

•CSP split in a doubleheader on Sunday against MSU Moorhead. CSP won game one 9-0 but would fall in game two with a score of 5-4.

•CSP is led by Grace Beseman who is batting .372 with a team-high 45 hits, 37 RBIs, 11 doubles, and nine homeruns.

•Clara Heislen is hitting .325 leading her team with 32 runs and has recorded 40 hits.

•CSP is batting .300 and averaging 5 runs per game, while the pitching staff has a 3.50 ERA with 229 strikeouts in 247 2/3 innings.

Series history vs.

Concordia-St. Paul

•SMSU and CSP have met 66 times since the 1977 season with the Mustangs leading 37-29.

•SMSU and CSP haven’t played each other in over two years with the last meet-up dating back to a doubleheader played in Marshall on April 24, 2019, with CSP earning a sweep by scores of 3-1 and 7-2.

•SMSU won three of four games from CSP during the 2018 season.

•SMSU looks to continue its success after sweeping University of Minnesota Duluth on Sunday. SMSU would shutout UMD in game one 8-0 in five innings and win game two, 4-3, in eight innings.
