PREP SPORTS ROUNDUP: Marshall boys golf places fifth, girls sixth at Fairmont Invite

FAIRMONT — The Marshall boys and girls golf team competed in the Fairmont Invite over the weekend, with the boys team placing fifth and the girls team taking sixth.

On the boys side, Marshall placed fifth with a team score of 354. Blue Earth Area took first with a score of 312, followed by Minnewaska Area in second (326), St. Peter in third (331) and Fairmont in fourth (337).

Marshall was led by Luke Ehlers who shot an 85 to place 16th while Grant Horvath shot an 87 to tie for 19th and Jayden Manthei had an 89 to place 26th. Sam Schwarz shot a 93 while Joey Fossum had a 96 and Evan Franson had a 98 to round out their scores.

“Luke led the team with an 85 and earned 16th place out of 58 golfers. Although he carded 2 birdies on the day, he was errant off the tee box and frequently found himself in trouble off of the tee box. Grant was close behind Ehlers with an 87. Grant had one blow up hole, but other than that played very consistently and hit many fairways with his drives.  It was fun to see him have success at a big meet like this,” Marshall boys coach Kari Ehlers said. “Our third spot was taken by Jayden in 26th place. Jayden also had a consistent day of golf. He was able to fine tune his driver this past week and see some success by hitting a lot of fairways. I was really proud of the way Jayden carried himself knowing it was his first big varsity golf tournament of his career. Sam rounded out the top four spots with a 93. Also playing were Evan and Joey.”

On the girls side, Marshall took sixth with a team score of 429. St. Peter took first with a team score of 345, followed by North Union in second (375), Fairmont in third (385), Blue Earth Area in fourth (405) and Worthington in fifth (420).

Marshall was led by Grace Ehlers who shot a 104, followed by Taylor Miller with a 106, Brooklyn Gossen with a 109 and Mild Du with a score of 110. Bella Philips shot a 116 and Eryn Kraft had a 132 to round out their scores.

“This was many of the girls’ first 18 holes ever,” Marshall girls coach Megan Nickel said. “They are definitely learning a lot and are getting used to competitive play.”

The girls team will compete today at 2 p.m. in Worthington while the boys team will take on Pipestone Area today at 2 p.m.
