Manteuffel and Wigand both pick up All-NSIC accolades at final day of NSIC Championships

DULUTH – The 2021 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships concluded on Saturday with Southwest Minnesota State senior Rebecca Manteuffel and senior Connor Wigand both earning all-conference honors. It was the second straight day Manteuffel picked-up All-NSIC accolades.

The three-day championship was held at Malosky Stadium on the campus of the University of Minnesota Duluth.

The SMSU women’s team recorded 17 points to finish 12th out of 15 teams, while the SMSU men’s team earned 28 points and placed 10th out of 12 teams. UMary won the women’s team title with 174 points with Minnesota State capturing the men’s team championship recording 214.5 points.

During Saturday’s competition, Manteuffel finished second in the discus with a toss of 47.99m to earn All-NSIC honors for the second time in the event. She also earned All-NSIC honors on Friday finishing second in the shot put and earning All-NSIC honors in the event for the second time.

Kate Battaforyen also advanced to the finals in the discus on Saturday and earned SMSU one point with an eighth-place finish of 42.36m.

For the SMSU men’s team on Saturday, Wigand went 48.82m in the discus to finish third overall and receive All-NSIC outdoors honors for the first time in his career.

Isaiah Nelson had a big day in the triple jump setting a school-record mark of 14.49m to finish fifth and pick-up four team points.

Renald Pierre earned SMSU five points with a fourth-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.90.

Jed Hansen cleared 4.24m in the pole vault to place seventh overall and earn SMSU two points.

On Friday, McKallen Smith earned All-NSIC accolades for the Mustangs with a third-place finish in the high jump. Smith and Wigand are the first SMSU men’s athlete to earn All-NSIC outdoor honors since the 2017 season.

SMSU will now await word if any individuals qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships on May 27-29 in Allendale, Mich. Manteuffel is expected to qualify in the shot put and possibly in the discus, while Smith is in the mix in the high jump.
