SMSU TENNIS: SMSU finishes third in NSIC standings with victory over USF

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Southwest Minnesota State University women’s tennis team concluded the regular season on Friday afternoon with a 5-2 Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference victory over the University of Sioux Falls inside Huether Family Match Pointe.

The victory secures SMSU a tie for third place in the NSIC standings, which is the program’s highest finish since placing second in 2008.

The NSIC Tournament bracket will be released later this weekend with the top eight teams qualifying for the tournament on April 23-24 in Sioux Falls, S.D.

In Friday’s match, the Mustangs earned the doubles point with Maegan Flight and Courtenay Leonard winning 6-4 at No. 1, while Cora Delich and Gwendolen Sior picked up a 6-3 win at No. 2.

Leonard finished the NSIC season with a 9-2 record in doubles play, teaming with Flight for four wins at No. 1 and Maja Louisa Harck for one win at No. 1 and four wins at No. 2.

In singles play, Flight completed her outstanding conference season with a 6-3, 6-0 victory at No. 1. She finished with a 9-1 record in NSIC play at No. 1 and registered a mark of 10-4 overall.

Leonard, playing at No. 2, picked up a 6-3, 6-2 victory, while Sior secured a straight set, 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 3. Delich also earned a singles victory earning a three-set, 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 win.

Silvia Poulakidas and Rachel Steffen lost at No. 5 and No. 6 singles respectively.
