SMSU TENNIS: Augustana earns NSIC crown with 7-0 victory over SMSU
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – No. 25 ranked Augustana pushed its Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference winning streak to 128 straight matches earning a 7-0 victory over Southwest Minnesota State in women’s college tennis on Wednesday afternoon.
SMSU drops to 7-7 overall, 7-3 NSIC, and will conclude the regular season on Friday with a match at the University of Sioux Falls starting at 12 p.m. Augustana with the victory clinches its 11th straight NSIC regular season championship. The Vikings are also the No. 1 ranked team in region rankings released earlier on Wednesday.
SMSU’s No. 1 doubles team of Maegan Flight and Courtenay Leonard picked up a huge victory defeating AU’s undefeated and No. 9 ranked team of Valeriya Monko and Florentia Hadjigeorgiou by a score of 6-4.
The Vikings picked up a 6-3 win at No. 2 and a 6-1 win at No. 3 doubles to secure the doubles team point.
The feature match of the day was at No. 1 singles as two of the top players in the league faced off with AU’s Monko surviving a 1-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-7) thriller over Flight.
The Vikings captured the other five singles matches in straight sets.
