SMSU BASEBALL: Mustangs to host Bemidji State in three-game series

MARSHALL — The Southwest Minnesota State University baseball team (7-14, 5-13 NSIC) concludes its 13-game homestand today and Sunday taking on Bemidji State University (3-19, 2-15 NSIC) at Legion Field in Marshall. Today’s doubleheader (7-9) begins at 1:30 p.m. with Sunday’s nine-inning games slated to begin at 12 p.m.

•SMSU, which has dropped seven straight games, with six of the losses by a total of 11 runs, begins play this weekend in 13th place in the NSIC standings, while BSU is currently in 15th place.

•Following this weekend, SMSU will play its next seven away from home, including at Minnesota Crookston on Wednesday in a doubleheader and next weekend, April 24-25, at Minot State for a three-game series.

•BSU is 3-19 overall, 2-15 NSIC, and is coming off a pair of losses at Concordia-St. Paul on Thursday by scores of 7-3 in eight innings and 13-9.

•Parker Borg leads the Beavers batting .339 (19 for 56) with six doubles and five stolen bases.

•Tom Keohen is hitting .219 (14 for 64) with a team-high three home runs and 15 RBIs.

•Through 22 games, BSU is batting .214, with 28 doubles, nine home runs, averaging 4.3 runs per game and have a team ERA of 12.21 in 160 innings with 136 strikeouts.

•SMSU and BSU have meet 169 times since the first meeting in 1970 with SMSU holding a 104-65 all-time advantage.

•SMSU earned a 16-9 non-conference victory last season in Tucson, Ariz., and won three of four games during the 2018 season.

•SMSU lost twice on Thursday to the University of Sioux Falls, 11-2 and 9-8. The loss in game two was SMSU’s seventh one-run loss of the season.

•SMSU scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth to tie game two at 8-8. Chase McDaniel blasted a two-run homer in the inning, while Brodie Smith hit a game-tying two-run single.

•Jake Hendricks hit two home runs in game two and finished 3 for 5 with three RBIs and two runs scored

•Derek Smith had two hits, including a home run, while Kip Gronholz added two hits.

•Nathan Kuhn ranks tied for second in the NSIC (league games only) in batting average at .439 (29 of 66).
