CLASS AAA GIRLS BASKETBALL: Marshall remains focused for championship game against Becker

MARSHALL — In each of its Class AAA tournament games so far, the Marshall girls basketball team has used key offensive runs to break open a tight game or rally from a deficit. Marshall was victorious both times, and now has a chance to bring home some hardware when it battles Becker in the Class AAA championship game today at 6 p.m. at Target Center. Marshall will look to bring home its third championship overall and first since the 2001-02 season when it completed back-to-back titles.

MHS (22-0) took down St. Croix Lutheran Academy on March 30 before finding itself in a seven-point deficit in the opening minutes of the second half of its semifinal matchup against the Academy of Holy Angels on Tuesday. But Marshall would use a massive 19-3 run over the next several minutes to reclaim the lead and ultimately earn the 75-58 victory.

Meanwhile, Becker (18-3) will look to cap off its season with a championship after reaching the title game last year before the season shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Bulldogs have a solid mix of experience and youth, led by seniors Julia Bengtson, Courtney Nuest, Megan Gamble and Jackie Yoerg as well as sophomores Elizabeth Mackedanz and Maren Westin. Becker has also averaged 82 points per game while allowing just 42 points per game.

Marshall coach Dan Westby said Becker has several players who have the ability to make some noise on offense and knows it’ll be challenging to guard them.

“They’re a very balanced team,” Westby said. “They have eight kids who consistently play and who can all contribute, so it’ll be a tough game.”

Marshall is led by its strong senior class, including Jordyn Hilgemann, Emily Meier, Abby Wendorff and Corrin Naughton, as well as juniors Danya Estrada and Ashleigh Steinbach and sophomore Bri Simpson. Marshall has averaged 73 points per game while holding opponents to just 42 points per game.

“We’ve shortened things up and have been trying to work on things they do while at the same time making sure that we stay sharp with our stuff,” Westby said. “We want to keep our kids fresh.”

Westby added they’re looking forward to the opportunity to play on the final day of state and they feel confident.

“Certainly we’re excited to be playing on the final day and we feel good with where we’re at,” Westby said. “It’s been a goal all year for our kids to get here and they are focused and in a good position. We’re looking forward to playing today.”
