STATE WRESTLING: Canby’s Shane Noyes wins heavyweight championship; area wrestlers wrap up at Class A individual tournament

ST. MICHAEL — Eight area wrestlers entered Saturday’s semifinal round of the Class A Individual tournament at St. Michael-Albertville High School looking to end their seasons on a strong note.
Multiple individuals had top placements, led by Canby’s Shane Noyes, who won the Class A championship at heavyweight. Noyes began his day against Eden Valley-Watkins’ Austin Schlangen where he won by a pin in 5:24. He then faced BOLD’s Tim Peppel and won by a 7-3 decision to advance to the championship match. There, he took on Minnewaska Area’s Jakob Swalla, and Noyes captured the championship in a 3-0 decision victory.
Noyes’ teammate, Lane Fink, also competed on Saturday, and began his day against Aitkin’s Marshall Larson at 120 pounds, but fell in a 5-2 decision. Fink then took on Zach Brown from Crookston in the consolation semifinals and advanced to the fifth-place match with a 3-1 decision victory. There, he faced Minneota’s Eric Carrasco, but fell in a 9-3 decision to place sixth.
Carrasco was one of four Minneota wrestlers that competed Saturday. Carrasco took on Border West’s Eli Larson in his first match of the day, but fell in an 8-5 decision. In the consolation semifinals, Carrasco defeated Zumbrota-Mazeppa’s Kaleb Lochner with a pin in 5:24 before taking fifth place. Zack Fier competed at 145 pounds for Minneota, and took on Badger-GB-MR’s Garrett Undeberg, winning by a pin in 3:36. In the semifinals, he faced Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa’s Blaine Fischer, but fell in a 9-2 decision. In the third-place match, Fier took on Gavin Gust from Dover-Eyota, falling by sudden victory (7-5) to place fourth.
Jonah Gruenes competed at 152 pounds for Minneota, and took on West Central Area-Ashby-Brandon-Evansville’s Jordan Lohse, winning by a 7-2 decision to advance to the semifinals. There, he faced Landon Gode from LPGE-Browerville, but fell in a 5-0 decision. In the third-place match, Gruenes took on Rece Voigt from Grand Meadow/LeRoy-Ostrander/Southland and won by a 5-2 decision to take third. Jackson Esping competed at 220 pounds for Minneota, and faced Dominik Vacura from Badger-GB-MR, falling by a pin. In the consolation semifinals, he took on Chatfield’s AJ Karver and won by forfeit to advance to the fifth-place match, where he won by a 5-3 decision over WCAA’s Colton Lindquist.
Finally, Tracy-Milroy-Balaton had two individuals wrap up their seasons on Saturday. Ayden Horner competed at 132 pounds, and took on BOLD’s Austin Kiecker, winning by major decision (10-2). In the semifinals, he would face United North Central’s Ethan Hendrickson, but fell in a 2-1 decision. In the third-place match, he took on Coy Gunderson of Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg and won in a 3-1 decision. Caden Johnson competed at 170 pounds for TMB/WWG, and faced Kimball Area’s Ashton Hanan, but fell in a pin. In the consolation semifinals, Johnson took on New York Mills’ Bren Salo and won by forfeit to advance to the fifth-place match, where he defeated Bertha-Hewitt-Verndale-Parkers Prairie’s Hunter Dean in a 12-9 decision.
