SMSU TENNIS: Mustangs split two matches on Saturday

WINONA -- The Southwest Minnesota State University women's tennis team split a pair of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference matches on Saturday inside the Winona Tennis Center. SMSU opened with a 5-2 victory over Upper Iowa, before losing 5-2 to Winona State.

SMSU is now 6-5 overall, 6-1 NSIC.

In the win over UIU (1-8, 1-5 NSIC), the Mustangs earned the doubles point as Maegan Flight and Courtenay Leonard won 6-3 at No. 1, while Maja Louisa Harck and Silvia Poulakidas earned a 6-1 victory at No. 3.

In singles play, Flight picked up a victory at No. 1 winning in straight sets (6-2, 6-1), with teammates Cora Delich at No. 4 (6-0, 6-1), Harck at No. 5 (6-0, 6-1) and Poulakidas at No. 6 (6-1, 6-0) also winning in straight sets to secure the team win.

In the setback to WSU (8-3, 7-2 NSIC), the Warriors won all three doubles matches to take a 1-0 lead. Flight remained undefeated in conference play earning a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles with Harck earning the second team point for the Mustangs with a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 5.

Southwest Minnesota State will nearly two weeks off before returning to the count on April 10 with matches versus UMary and MSU Moorhead in Owatonna.
