SMSU TENNIS: Mustangs drop first match of season on Thursday

MARYVILLE, Mo. – The Southwest Minnesota State women’s tennis team stepped out of conference play on Thursday afternoon suffering a 7-0 loss to Northwest Missouri State. The match was played outdoors at Frank Grube Court on the campus of NWMSU.

The loss was the first of the season for SMSU, which drops to 4-1 overall. NWMSU, which was picked to finish second in the MIAA preseason poll, improves to 2-0.

In doubles play, Gwendolen Sior and Cora Delich earned a 7-6 (8-6) win at No. 2 for the Mustangs, but the Bearcats captured the team point with a 6-2 win at No. 1 and a 6-1 victory at No. 3.

NWMSU won all six singles matches in straight sets to complete the victory.

Southwest Minnesota State is back on the court today with a 9 a.m. match at Missouri Western State in St. Joseph.
