SMSU TENNIS: SMSU remains perfect with two wins on Sunday

GRAND FORKS, N.D. — The Southwest Minnesota State women’s tennis team remained undefeated following two weekends of play earning a pair of wins on Sunday, defeating Minnesota Crookston 7-0, before earning a hard-fought 4-3 win over Bemidji State. Both matches were played at the Health Choice & Fitness club.

In the afternoon match versus BSU (2-3, 2-3 NSIC), SMSU (4-0, 4-0 NSIC) earned its third one-point win of the season highlighted by a comeback victory by Maja Louisa Harck at No. 5 singles. With the overall team score tied at 3-3, Harck trailed 5-1 in the second set, but fought back to win 7-6 and earn a 6-1, 7-6 victory.

Maegan Flight earned a point for SMSU with a 6-4, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles, while Gwendolen Sior also secured a point with a 6-3, 6-0 victory at No. 4. Silvia Poulakidas also won in straight sets at No. 6 by a score of 6-0, 6-3.

SMSU lost the doubles point with Harck and Courtenay Leonard picking up the lone win at No. 2 with a 6-4 win.

In the first match versus UMC (0-4, 0-4 NSIC) on Sunday morning, SMSU earned the doubles point as Cora Delich and Maegan Flight at No. 1 and Gwendolen Sior and Silvia Poulakidas at No. 3 won by scores of 6-0. Courtenay Leonard and Maja Louisa Harck at No. 2 also earned a victory by a 6-1 score.

In singles play, SMSU lost just four points five of the six matches in cruising to the win. Cora Delich won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1, Leonard earned a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 2, while Harck at No. 3 also won 6-0, 6-1. Sior picked up a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4, Poulakidas earned a 6-1, 6-0 victory, while Kennedy Torgerson won at No. 6 by a score of 6-3, 6-0.

Southwest Minnesota State continues action next Sunday with two matches against two of the top teams in the conference. SMSU will take on Sioux Falls at 9 a.m. before facing Augustana at 1 p.m. with both matches at the Great Life Woodlake Athletic Club in Sioux Falls, S.D. Augustana has won 121 straight NSIC matches.
